How to read a mosaic chart – US Terms

Mosaic charts can be a little confusing when you first look at them, but they’re simple to read once you
understand what you’re looking at.

• BS means border stitch. This is a SC through BOTH loops.

• LS means last stitch. You work your repeats in the red box, and before your ending border stitch, you
work your last stitch. This is just so that pattern is symmetrical.
• A blank box means you work a SC (Single Crochet) in the BACK LOOP of the stitch in the row below
• A box with an X means you work a DC (Double Crochet) in the FRONT LOOP of the stitch two rows
below

On the chart below, the green pattern you see is how it will turn out once it has been crocheted.

You don’t change colours halfway through the row to create the pattern.

As shown below, you use one colour per row – all the way along. Fastening off at the end of the row and
starting the new row again from the right-hand side.

Row 4 you use Colour B. Work SC in blank spaces, DC where you see an X.
Row 3 you use Colour A. Work SC in blank spaces, DC where you see an X.
Row 2 you use Colour B. There are no X’s, so you SC all the way along.
Row 1 you use Colour A. There are no X’s, so you SC all the way along.

• In Row 1 – using Colour A - all the stitches are blank boxes, so you SC - all the way along.

• In Row 2 – using Colour B - again all the stitches are blank boxes so you SC in the back loop of the stitch
in Row 1 - all the way along. Even though there are white boxes – just ignore them and continue the
whole row using Colour B.

• In Row 3 – using Colour A. Stitch 1 is blank so it’s a back loop SC.

Stitch 2 has an X, so you DC, over the stitch in row 2, to the front loop of the stitch in row 1.
