Transitions or signal words help

you follow the direction of a writer’s
thoughts. They
are like signposts on the road that
guide the traveler.
Study the following sentence: I love
writing poems. It makes me feel
alive and
productive.

▪ The sentences indicate that the

writer loves writing poems because
it makes him
or her alive and productive.
▪ To show specificity, the signal
word “because” can be used.
▪ To change the relationship
between the sentences, other
transition words can be
used. Transitions (or signal words)
are words and phrases that show
the
connection between ideas.
▪ To illustrate how transitional
devices or signal words guide us,
here are the
similar sentences, however, this
time with another transition word:
I love writing poems; hence, it
makes me feel productive and
alive.
Here, the writer loves writing poems
because it results in making him or
her alive and
productive.
▪ Common signal words introduce
an example, introduce an opposite
idea, or
show an exception, show
emphasis, addition, comparison or
contrast,
illustration, and cause and effect.

1-3. No matter how challenging the
current situation brought by this
global pandemic, one must always
remain positive regardless of the
circumstances. Because our
thoughts control our actions, we
must stay calm and optimistic.
Therefore, it is very important to
always think and feel positive. One
important thought to keep in mind
as once said by Pope Francis is for
us to “Think well, feel well and do
well”. By doing so, one can surely
win over this global pandemic. (3
signal words)

4-7. Success requires a lot of

efforts or hard work. For example, if
you want to be a lawyer someday
you must work for it. Also, bear in
mind that there is no short cut nor
easy way towards achieving your
dreams. Moreover, as a universal
truth, “Success is not only for the
few and favored one; but for those
who are determined”. True in its
sense, “If there is a will, there is a
way”. Therefore, with a combined
effort and determination success is
surely within your reach. (4 signal
