COMBINATIONS
Objectives:
a. Define combination.
b. Illustrate the combination of objects
c. Differentiate situations that involve permutations or combinations.
d. Solve real life problems involving combinations and permutations.

COMBINATION
is defined as an arrangement of objects where the order in which selected objects DOES NOT
MATTER.

A problem can be said to illustrate combinations when it involves selecting or choosing a

group of items from a set without regard to the order in which they are selected. Also,
repetitions are not allowed.

The number of combinations of n objects taken r at a time is denoted by:

Where:
n = total number of objects/elements
r = selected number of objects / elements

Example: Given the letters A, B, and C. Illustrate all the possible ways we can pick two letters.
Solution:
Listing Method Formula

AB BC
AC CB
BA CA

It is very important to make the distinction between permutations and combinations. In

permutations, order matters and in combinations order does not matter. To summarize:

keywords The basic difference between a combination and a

permutation is that while the former
PERMUTATION selection, choose, pick
is just a way of selecting something, the latter is a
arrangement, ordered, way of selecting as well as arranging it.
COMBINATION
unique
Example:
a. Determine the top five winners from 6 contestant (1,2,3,4,5,6)in a mathematics
quiz bee. PERMUTATION
b. Choosing 2 household chores to do before dinner from 4 different chores
(cooking, washing, marketing, scrubbing). COMBINATION
