LEARNING OBJECTIVE By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students explained that ‘Special Relationships’ is the theme of Unit
4. Students asked to work n groups to discuss any special
relationships that they have and to think of many different kinds
relationships as possible. Students asked to turn to page 43 and to
look at the picture and read the accompany caption. Students
asked what is unusual about the picture and for their reaction to it.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity A(page 44)
1. Students asked to keep their books closed and they asked
what jobs animals can do. Students make a list on the
board of as many jobs as possible and write the animals
that do them by each one. Students asked to turn to page
44 and to discuss pictures 1-3 with a partner to say which
dogs are ‘working’. Each pair asked to report what they
said to the class and to justify their answers. Any
differences of opinions accepted as long as students can
provide a logical explanation for their answers.
Activity B(page 44)
1. Students asked to read the instructions and they
encouraged to refer back to the list of jobs that animals
can do that they made earlier to help them here. Students
asked to make a list on their own and then to compare
their list with a partner’s.
Activity C(page 44)
1. Students asked to read the instructions and they asked
which information from the text they know already.
Students asked to look at the pictures that accompany the
text and the paragraph headings and they asked what
other information they think they will read about.
POST LESSON Students asked to review their learning by giving a one-minute
verbal summary of the lessons. They allowed to discuss their ideas
with their talk partner and then students choose to share their
summaries with the class.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Students asked the following questions at random round the class:
- What is the neighbourhood where you live called?
- Dou you know any pets which help their answers?
- How old were you when you met your best friend?
- Is there anyone in your family who has travelled to Asia?
Students explained that these questions use relative clauses and
that this is grammar point they will be learning about in this
lesson.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity A(page 47)
1. Students asked to read the instructions and make sure
they understand what they have to do. Students asked to
do their task individually, but check answers as a class.
Activity B(page 470
1. Students encouraged to read the sentences in A gain to
help them find the answers in B. Students explained that
there is one correct answer for each question and that the
words in 3 and 5 in A count as one answer.
2. Students asked to do the task individually, but check
answers as a class. Students explained that relative
pronouns are words which refer to another noun in a
sentence containing a relative cause.
Activity C(page 47)
1. Students asked to read the instructions and sentences and
then discuss the difference in meaning with a partner.

they have. Students asked to do the task individually, but

previous lessons.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity A(page 48)
1. Students asked to work in pairs to describe the two
pictures on page 48. One student should describe the one
in the top right-hand corner and the other should describe
the picture at the bottom of the page. Students asked to
describe the people and the situations as well as to guess
what might have happened before and after the pictures
were taken.
2. Students asked what kind of emotions the girl in the top-
right picture might feeling. Students asked to read the
instructions and make sure they understand what they
have to do. Students asked to do the task on their own and
then to compare their answers with a friend.
Activity B(page 48)
1. Students asked to read the instructions and make sure
they understand what they have to do. Students elicited
that they have to write a or b in the boxes besides each
speaker. The recording played once all the way through
and students asked to write their answers, then students
asked to discuss their answers with a partner and to
justify any answers they have that are different.
2. The recording played again and students asked to check
their answers and to fill in any missing answers. The
answers checked as a class and students asked to justify
their answers.
POST LESSON Students asked to identify with their talk partners at least one new
word or expressions that they have learned in relation to the
lesson’s topic.
