PRBOA Talk by Arch Gigi ChuaChiaco

 Take the only if you feel that you are prepared

 Review class helps you in your study pace
 Put more time in studying

Techniques in filling up the answer sheet

 Question sheets ranges from 25 – 30 sheets including drawings.

 Part 1 – HOA, TOA, Prof Prac, Planning
 25 situations each for planning, history, theory, and prof prac
 For every situations, there will be 5 questions
 Read situations very well since question will be based on the situation
 If you know the answer, do not answer immediately in the answer sheet
 If you have marked the answer sheet, there is no way you can change your answer if you change
your mind since BAWAL ANG ERASURES
 Mark answers on the questionnaires first
 If there is available time, you may want to go back and review your answers
 When done, transfer all answers to the answer sheet
 PRBOA makes 300 questions every exam then it is stored in a question bank in the computer
 Questions can serve as reference to each other
 If not sure with the answer, use elimination method in answering
 There are four choices
 Without intending to be tricky, the questions may appear to be tricky
 Always make a reference to the situation because sometimes you might think that your answer
is correct pero mali pala

Part 2 – Utilities,Structural Conceptualization, Building Materials and Technology = 150 questions

 50 questions each subject

 Understand and no need to memorize the subjects
 We all rely on engineers for structural and utilities. We do not design structural and utilities but
we need to know what they are doing. We do not have liability over the design but on the job
site, we need to know how things are done. Because if we rely too much on the engineers,
changes on the design will be made which we are trying to avoid.
 Architects do specifications and engineers follow
 There are 30 topics. Each topic is a situation, for each situation, there will be 5 questions = 150
questions.
 The computer is the one who randomly picks questions
 Questions are drawn from our experience as practitioners.
 In school, we are taught the WHAT. The WHY and the HOW are learned from the two years of
experience.
 Sample question on Air Condition : ACU comes with compressor is for outdoor; while Fan Coil U
is for outdoor indoor
 Syllabus:

Utilities

 Plumbing
o Water source, storage supply and distribution
o Plumbing roughing-in and fixtures
o Drainage and sewerage systems
o Waste disposal
 Mechanical
o Ventilating
o Air Conditioning
o Conveyors
 Electrical
o Power and Lighting
 Source and Supply
 AC and DC
 Solar
 Materials of Acoustics
 Communications

Structural Conceptualization

 Structural Systems
 Loads, Lateral Forces
 Structural Fundamentals
 Soils and Foundations
 Columns
 Beams
 Trusses
 Walls
 Connectors
 Window Construction
 Steel Construction
 Concrete Construction
 Building Code Requirements

Building Materials and Construction

 Civic Works
 Carpentry and Joinery
 Masonry
 Sheet Metal and Tinsmithing
 Structural Steel
 Concrete and Reinforced Concrete
 Water Proofing
 Glass and Glazing
 Painting and Varnishing
 Doors and Windows
 Hardware
 Architectural Interior Works
 Specialized Works

Part 3 - Planning and Design

 Has 5 Major Topics:

o High Density Housing
o Low/Medium Density Housing
o Industrial
o Commercial
o Institutional
 Each topic, there will be 6 situations:
o Compliance with Laws
o Site Planning
o Space Planning
o Architectural Design
o Architectural Interiors
o Structural Conceptualization
 Some question may appear the same but it is given in a different situation
 Compliance on the law - building code
 Read well Rule 7 and Rule 8
 For questions asking for Maximum or Minimum Allowable, it means that there is a table since
there is no absolute figure
 If the question asks, what is the value? that means you compute
 Can make tabs and put highlights on rule 7 and 8.
 Use the back part of your answer sheets to plot and to compute for setbacks and FAR
 Usual errors are: sloping towards…, orientation towards…, since the interpretation of the
situation is wrong. Plotting will make it easier to understand the situation.
 Most of the questions are practical and application of what you have learned in school.
 Understand and no need to memorize.
 If the computer sees that there are more than one answers, the answer is invalidated
 Understand the principles
 Understand application of parts and components
 Know proper materials to be used in the design
 It has to be applicable in the Philippines

 Sample questions:
o Difference between a clean-out and a p-trap
o What is similar with the different system? a. Lahat may p-trap b.lahat nasa under
ground

 Proper disposal system in relation to existing situations

 Principles of air conditioning.
 No need to memorize all the parts.
 How many tons of air conditioning for a room e.g. 1 ton per every 12m2 in a retail store with a
dimension of 50m x 20m
 Understand the principles of conveyor: Where is escalator used compared to an elevator?
 When do we use dumb waiter? – hindi to pang tao
 Knowing the why and how beyond the what
 Knowing the advantages and disadvantages
 Compute space requirements. There is a given.
 Fire code nandun nasa rule 7 and 8
 How big is an elevator shaft? How big is the space that you need to put an elevator/escalator
given its leng? What is the slope? 35 % - 45%
 Building code requirement for a certain type of structure
 Appropriate lighting fixture for a specific structure
 Questions are based on what is current and based on direct application
 Pin light for residence for interior design
 Mercury lamp for parking
 Lighting for parking, street, rooms
 Know the acronyms
 Power supply and circuitry
 Problems are limited to residential since not all get to experience to design high risebuildingd
 Electrical Engineers design the loads but it is the architect who design the lines. We recommend
what light or switch to use and where to locate it.
 We do not compute for loads but the load table is given to test if we know how to read it.
 Give recommendation for all the disciplines
 The reason why we need to know all these things because the architects have the overall view
of the structure and its utilities
 Data relies on frequency which are not compatible with power
 If ipagtabiang telephone wire and cable wire for electricity may interference.
 Power and data cable: huwagipagtabi.
 If maraming cable, put it underground, called raised flooring
 Questions like, given the drawing, How many are connected and where is it connected?
 Properties of sound control.
 If there is a machine on the second floor, what will you do in order to prevent the vibration on
the entire floor – elevate the machine on top of a spring
 Never ever put a dome as an auditorium design
 White noise – you play music in order not to hear the conversation of people from the other
station
 NO questions will be given such as airport, oceanarium, nuclear power plant. In actual practice,
you cannot fish that in 8 hours.
 Precast, post tensioning
