Microscopy - basics

How to use the resources in this section

This section will help you prepare for the practical week. The learning resources in this section will help
you with your microscopy skills. There are four simulations that allow you to setup and use a microscope
virtually. We encourage you to contact a local laboratory, maybe your clinical microbiology diagnostic lab,
and arrange for a few hours of hands-on practice. We are providing all the resources you need to identify and
diagnose parasitic infections covered by this course.

What you should be able to do with a microscope (if you have an

opportunity to practice)
The RCP stipulates that all our students are able to operate a basic compound light microscope.
Demonstrate that you can setup your microscope for use
Demonstrate that you can place a slide onto the stage of a compound microscope
Demonstrate that you can find the focal plane of the specimen under low magnification
Demonstrate that you can apply oil to the slide and shift to oil-immersion magnification (typically
100x)
Demonstrate that you can rediscover the focal plane and clearly show the specimen.

the ability to find the specimen that is important rather than identification but if you have access to
It is
parasitology specimens, that would be useful as it is practical to train with specimens that you are
required to identify in the exam. However, we provide all the image based specimens that you need to
be able to identify.

Learn how to use a microscope

This section provides a video that shows how to setup a microscope and several simulations that allow you to
practice setting up and using a microscope online.
How to setup a microscope - Dr Leandro Lemgruber (approximately 6 minutes)

This brief video explains how to setup a microscope. The model shown we would normally use during the practical
week. You should view this first and then move on to try the interactive simulations that follow this link.

How to set up a microscope - By the end of this interactive session, you will be able to describe
the key steps involved in setting up a microscope.

Focusing and navigating with a microscope - This interactive session allows you to practice using
the focus and mechanical stage controls of a microscope

Estimating size using a microscope - Learn how to estimate the size of an object under the
microscope

Köhler illumination - By the end of this interactive session, you will be able to describe the key
steps involved in setting up a microscope for Köhler illumination.
