All Micro Motion Coriolis meters produced by Emerson are factory calibrated in ISO/IEC 17025 accredited and ISO 9001
certified laboratories. With a factory baseline, Smart Meter Verification is traceable to one or more of the following
national metrological institutes: CENAM-Mexico, INM-Romania, NIM-China, NIST-USA, VSL-The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND
A Coriolis meter has no moving parts so there is nothing to wear or break. Therefore, in clean fluid services, the
expectation is that the meter will not exhibit a calibration change over time.
Fluids that corrode, erode, or coat the flow tube can alter the mechanical characteristics of the meter and may
change the meter’s calibration. Other mechanical damage (such as over pressurization) can also affect the meter’s
calibration. Smart Meter Verification measures the mechanical characteristics of the meter and detects subtle
changes that affect the calibration constants.
METHOD
Smart Meter Verification compares the mechanical properties of the meter at operating conditions to the factory
measured values. When the first Smart Meter Verification test is performed in the field a Field Reference Point is
applied. The Field Reference Point reduces external biases on the stiffness measurement, such as temperature and
pressure. It is highly advisable that the first Smart Meter Verification test be performed at normal operating
conditions. In general, Micro Motion recommends running Smart Meter Verification periodically (at least once per
month) using the scheduling feature in the transmitter.
DESCRIPTION OF RESULTS
When the Smart Meter Verification test is completed, the result is reported as Pass, Fail, or Abort. In all cases where a
Smart Meter Verification Professional test aborts, no report will be generated.
Pass Indicates that the meter is functioning properly and performing within specifications.
Fail The current SMV value is statistically different from the factory baseline value. Verify the sensor condition
by performing a visual inspection, density verification, or field proving. If possible, run Smart Meter
Verification with ProLink III Professional and save the report and Smart Meter Verification results. Contact
the factory for further evaluation and instructions.
