What’s in Slime?

Atoms, Molecules, and Science!

4 Primary Atoms in Borax Slime
1. Hydrogen
2. Boron
3. Carbon
4. Oxygen
3 Necessary Molecules for making borax slime
1. Water: 2 hydrogen, and 1 oxygen atoms.
2. PVAc (PolyVinyl Acetate (C4H6O2)n): 4
carbon, 6 hydrogen, and 2 oxygen atoms.
● It is a polymer!
○ Forms long repeating chains of
itself.
3. Borax (Sodium Tetraborate
Decahydrate (Na2B4O7 •10H2O)): 2
sodium ions, 1 borate ion, and 10 water
molecules.
● It is also a polymer!
● The borate ion is the key for making
slimes.
What is a Slime?
● What can slime do?
○ Slime’s shape is no different than other liquid, but it is
more viscous that you can stretch and tear it, and you can
bounce it.
○ It is called a Non-Newtonian Fluid: Has both liquid
properties and solid properties.
■ The borate, the polyvinyl acetate and the water molecules
together make a structure that can resist small forces,
but stronger forces can tear the borates away from the
polymer chains only to connect again later.
Mixture Problem Using Linear Equations (Possible Pre-Calc Problem)

Mixture problems occur in many different situations. For

example, a chemist may wish to obtain a solution of a desired
strength by combining other solutions.
● A mixture problems may all be solved by using the bucket
method.
Mixture Problem Using Linear Equations (Possible Pre-Calc Problem)
EX: How much water must be added to 14 oz of a 20% alcohol
solution to obtain a 7% alcohol solution?
Mixture Problem Using Linear Equations (You Try)

EX: In a chemistry lab, a student has two slime solutions that

contain borax and is mixing them. One solution contains 15% borax,
and the other is 5% borax. How many ml of each solution should be
mixed to the 100 ml slime solution which contains 8% borax
solution.
