Notes 1. Students must obtain Grade D or above in both Continuous Assessment

and Examination in order to pass this subject.
2. NO re-assessment will be granted in all circumstances.
3. Absence from the final examination will automatically result in a “Fail”
grade for this subject. Students with very special grounds for absence from
examination may apply for late assessment. Permission is subject to the
approval of the Subject Assessment Review Panel (SARP). Engagement in
work, interview, overseas duty/travel and other related conflicts will normally
NOT be considered as grounds for granting late assessment.

3.2. Rationale

Participation enables students to analyze issues pertinent to talent management. The class discussion
also facilitates peer learning and enables effective communication with fellow classmates.

In-class exercise will enable students to apply the subject concepts for analysing talent management
practices in different contexts, thereby demonstrating their achievement of the learning outcomes on
an ongoing basis.

Group project is used to help students solidify their understanding of key concepts in the subject
through applying these concepts in the analysis of real case in Hong Kong.

Test and examination enable students to demonstrate their level of understanding and their ability to
apply the subject concepts.

Students are required to spend at least 6 hours per week in preparing for the class (2 hours of
preparation are usually needed for 1 hour of lecture/seminar). Students should always access the e-
learning platform of Moodle for downloading lecture notes & reading materials for each class meeting.
Therefore, students are expected to have fully prepared before attending each class meeting.

3.3. Grading

Subject Grade Short Elaboration on subject grading description

Grade Point Description
A+ 4.3 Excellent Demonstrates excellent achievement of intended
subject learning outcomes by being able to
A 4.0 skillfully use concepts and solve complex
problems. Shows evidence of innovative and
critical thinking in unfamiliar situations, and is
A- 3.7
able to express the synthesis or application of
ideas in a logical and comprehensive manner.
B+ 3.3 Good Demonstrates good achievement of intended
subject learning outcomes by being able to use
appropriate concepts and solve problems. Shows
B 3.0 the ability to analyse issues critically and make
well-grounded judgements in familiar or standard
B- 2.7 situations, and is able to express the synthesis or
application of ideas in a logical and

C+ 2.3 Satisfactory Demonstrates satisfactory achievement of
intended subject learning outcomes by being able
C 2.0 to solve relatively simple problems. Shows some
capacity for analysis and making judgements in a
variety of familiar and standard situations, and is
C- 1.7
able to express the synthesis or application of
ideas in a manner that is generally logical but
fragmented.

Subject Grade Short Elaboration on subject grading description
Grade Point Description
D+ 1.3 Pass Demonstrates marginal achievement of intended
subject learning outcomes by being able to solve
relatively simple problems. Can make basic
D 1.0 comparisons, connections and judgements and
express the ideas learnt in the subject, though
there are frequent breakdowns in logic and
clarity.
F 0.0 Fail Demonstrates inadequate achievement of
intended subject learning outcomes through a
lack of knowledge and/or understanding of the
subject matter. Evidence of analysis is often
irrelevant or incomplete.

Indicative descriptors for modifier grades:

Main Grade The student generally performed at this level, indicating mastery of
(solid) the subject intended learning outcomes at this level.
+ The student consistently performed at this level and exceeded the
(exemplary) expectations of this level in some regards, but not enough to claim
mastery at the next level.
- The student basically performed at this level, but the performance
(marginal) was inconsistent or fell slightly short in some regards.
Note: The above indicative descriptors for modifier grades are not applicable to the passing
grades D and D+

‘F’ is a subject failure grade, whilst all others (‘D’ to ‘A+’) are subject passing grades. No credit
will be earned if a subject is failed.

(1) PARTICIPATION (10% of CA) & (2) IN-CLASS EXERCISE (20% of CA)

The Task

Active class participation and discussion are expected from each of the students. In-class questions and
exercises are intended to enable students to systematically analyse the issues pertinent to talent management in
different contexts, and to effectively communicate their ideas.

Students are expected to actively participate in the in-class questions, exercises and discussion. Students will be
asked to submit some of the in-class works.

(3) MID-TERM TEST (30% of CA)

The Task

This is a closed-book mid-term test to be held in Lecture 8. Students are expected to acquire comprehensive
understanding of the key concepts of the subject. They are required to demonstrate their level of understanding
and their ability to apply the concepts. More information will be given in Tutorial 5.

(4) GROUP PROJECT (40% of CA)

The Task

Students have to form project groups of around 6 people. Each group is required to choose a real company
to examine TM-related issues. The company should have at least 30 employees. There should be no overlap
in the companies chosen by different groups in the same tutorial class.

In the project, you have to focus on a mid-level or senior position in that company to elaborate, analyse, and
make recommendations regarding the organization’s TM practices in the following areas:
1. Recruiting Talent for the Position
2. Selecting Talent for the Position
3. Developing Talent in the Position

Please note that the report is NOT just a mere descriptive account of the organization’s TM practices
related to recruitment, selection and development. Critical analysis is pertinent. You also need to provide
viable recommendations if you find that their current practices need improvements.

The group needs to cover the following parts in the project:

(Suggested proportion: around 20%)

1. Cover Page*
2. Table of Contents
3. Company Background (history, size, nature of business, mission, etc.)

(Suggested proportion: around 60%)

4. Information of the Job Position (title, responsibilities, requirements and other relevant information)
5. Recruiting Talent for the Position
6. Selecting Talent for the Position Evaluate existing practices of the company
7. Developing Talent in the Position

(Suggested proportion: around 20%)

8. Recommendations on the existing TM practices
9. Conclusion
10. Appendices (if any)
11. References (if any)

*Subject code, subject title, company name, job position name, and names & student ID number of
all group members.

Important Classes

The group is required to confirm the choice of company and job in Tutorial 5.

There will be two project consultation sessions held to allow the group to discuss the project issues among its
members and to consult with the lecturer, i.e. Tutorial 6 and Tutorial 9#.
#
For Tutorial 9, your group is highly recommended to show your draft project layout with preliminary findings (~ 2 A4
pages or 8 PPT slides). Such arrangement is to ensure that your group is making decent progress and can allow the
lecturer to give you timely feedback.

EXAMINATION

The Task

An OPEN-NOTE Examination will be arranged. Students are allowed to bring ONE piece of A4 paper
containing own prepared notes to the examination venue. The class will be informed of the format in due
course. Final examination with primarily open-ended questions aims to assess individual students’ ability to
apply concepts, acquired knowledge and skills to explain issues pertinent to talent management.
