The aim of this unit is to offer students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills required for managing
and implementing a project. It is to undertake independent research and investigation for carrying
out and executing a business project which meets appropriate business aims and objectives.
On successful completion of this unit students will have the confidence to engage in decision-making,
problem-solving and research activities using project management skills. They will have the
fundamental knowledge and skills to enable them to investigate and examine relevant business
concepts within a work-related context, determine appropriate outcomes, decisions or solutions and
present evidence to various stakeholders in an acceptable and understandable format.

Format:

The submission is in the form of an e-portfolio which includes the following components:
(4000 words)
1. Project management plan including a work breakdown structure in the form a Gantt
chart
2. A completed project Logbook
3. An audio recording of a performance review
4. A business case presentation.
The business case presentation is in the form of a 10-minute individual PowerPoint presentation and
5 minutes allocated for questions. The presentation slides and speaker notes should be submitted in
the e-portfolio. You are required to make effective use of PowerPoint headings, bullet points and
subsections as appropriate. Your research should be referenced using the Harvard referencing
system. Please also provide a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended
word limit is 1,000 to 1,500 words, including speaker notes, although you will not be •enalised for
exceeding the total word limit.

You are required to submit an e-portfolio on a comprehensive research on the following Topic: What
talent strategies do the best companies use to attract and retain people?

Scenario
You are employed as an assistant within the professional development team of an organisation of
your choice. You have been asked to conduct a small scale project, in the form of an investigative case
study, into what talent strategies best companies use to attract and retain their staff?

Staff retention, training and morale is key in any industry where talented motivated employees can help
differentiate one organisation from another and influence business success. An increasing number of
businesses are rethinking ways to get the most from their staff. Rising costs, recruitment difficulties and
changing employee attitudes mean that, for many employers, the traditional approaches to recruiting,
training and retaining staff are being revisited to harness and develop talent and ultimately drive
competitive advantage.

Talent Management within the organisation which is to be presented as a business case for management
consideration on how to improve staff retention in the organisation. The project will involve investigating
how the organisation implements talent management. You are to investigate good practice within other
businesses and employee feedback to support your collate employee feedback to support your
recommendations. This will be presented to your line manager as a business case with proposals to
improve staff retention followed by a performance review in which you will need to reflect upon the
project in relation to your own personal and professional development.

 How can you approach the problem, opportunity, hypothesis and requirements being
posed?

 Apply a range of secondary research sources to plan/scope and support the project and
its findings. Secondary research sources may include textbooks, journal articles, newspapers
and magazine articles (not factual accounts).

 Develop your project management plan based on the deliverables of the project, the
constraints of the project and the assumptions made. Use a Gantt chart to document your
stages and timelines.

 Conduct your project according to your stated project plan and meet with your tutor to
receive a sign-off at each stage of the project process.

Primary research sources may include original first-hand accounts, legal and historical documents,
results of experiments and market research data collection.

 Keep notes of your progress throughout the project in a logbook or a reflective journal,

identified by your Tutor. This is an important record of your work and must be used to
/record the development of your ideas and your progress through the project. This should include: o
A record of what you did, when and what you were thinking. o A record of where
things went wrong and what you did to overcome any unexpected results.

You will be asked to reflect on the success of your project and your own performance in a
