ELECTRIC FLUX
AND GAUSS’S
LAW
SLIDESMANIA.COM
OBJECTIVES:
• Calculate electric flux.
• Use Gauss’s law to infer electric field due
to uniformly distributed charges on long
wires, spheres, and large plates.
• Solve problems involving electric charges,
dipoles, forces, fields, and flux in contexts such
as, but not limited to, systems of point
charges, electrical breakdown of air, charged
pendulums, electrostatic ink -jet printers.

ELECTRIC FLUX
 measures how much the electric
field 'flows' through an area. Electric
flux is proportional to the number of
electric field lines going through a
normal perpendicular surface.

ELECTRIC FLUX FORMULA

Φ =𝑬(𝑨)
Φ - electric flux
E- electric field
A- area

EXAMPLE
What is the electric flux
through a sphere that has a
radius of 1.00 m and carries a
charge of +1.00 µC at its
center?

Gauss’s Law
It states that the electric flux through any
closed surface is equal to the net charge
inside the surface divided by the
permittivity of free space.

∅=
𝜀0

−12
𝜀0 = 8.854 × 10
Example
What is the flux from a 12μC charge
inside of a sphere?
12 ×10−6
∅=
8.854 × 10−12
𝑁𝑚 2
∅ = 1. 36 × 106

Example:

You have a cube with a 6μC charge in

the center. Each of the cube's sides is
12cm long. What is the flux through
one of the faces of the cube?

Example:

A closed irregular surface encloses a

net charge of 1.50 x 10 -6 C. what is
the net electric flux through the
surface?
