LESSON 3
SLIDESMANIA.
ELECTRIC FLUX
AND GAUSS’S
LAW
SLIDESMANIA.
OBJECTIVES:
• Calculate electric flux.
• Use Gauss’s law to infer electric field due to
uniformly distributed charges on long wires, spheres, and
large plates.
• Solve problems involving electric charges, dipoles,
forces, fields, and flux in contexts such as, but not limited
to, systems of point charges, electrical breakdown of air,
charged pendulums, electrostatic ink -jet printers.
SLIDESMANIA.
ELECTRIC FLUX
 measures how much the electric field 'flows'
through an area. Electric flux is proportional
to the number of electric field lines going
through a normal perpendicular surface.
SLIDESMANIA.
ELECTRIC FLUX FORMULA

Φ =𝑬(𝑨)
Φ - electric flux
E- electric field
A- area
SLIDESMANIA.
EXAMPLE

What is the electric flux through a

sphere that has a radius of 1.00 m
and carries a charge of +1.00 µC at
its center?
SLIDESMANIA.
ELECTRIC FLUX FORMULA

Φ =𝑬(𝑨)
Φ - electric flux
E- electric field
A- area
SLIDESMANIA.
EXAMPLE
What is the electric flux for the following sets of
variables?

a. θ = 75˚

EXAMPLE

What is the electric flux for the following sets of

variables?
SLIDESMANIA.
Gauss’s Law
It states that the electric flux through any closed
surface is equal to the net charge inside the surface
divided by the permittivity of free space.
SLIDESMANIA.
Example
What is the flux from a 12μC charge inside of a
sphere?

SLIDESMANIA.
Example:

You have a cube with a 6μC charge in the

center. Each of the cube's sides is 12cm long.
What is the flux through one of the faces of the
cube?
SLIDESMANIA.
Example:

A closed irregular surface encloses a net

charge of 1.50 x 10 -6 C. what is the net
electric flux through the surface?
