Introduction to Human-Robot Interaction: A Multi-Perspective Introductory Course

ABSTRACT

This paper delves into the intricacies of designing an introductory course focused on Human-
Robot Interaction (HRI). The primary objective of this project-driven course is to familiarize
undergraduate and graduate engineering students, particularly those in Computer Science,
Mechanical Engineering, and Robotics programs, with essential theories and methodologies
crucial in the HRI domain. These concepts are often omitted in conventional engineering degree
programs, making this course a vital supplement to their education. The course structure is
meticulously crafted to achieve its educational goals. It starts by introducing students to
stakeholder analysis, a critical aspect of understanding HRI from various perspectives. From
there, the course progresses systematically, covering a wide array of topics including but not
limited to qualitative methods, design principles, computational techniques, and quantitative
analysis. This holistic approach ensures that students gain a comprehensive understanding of
HRI, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. One of the unique aspects of
this course is its emphasis on integration. By incorporating key qualitative, design,
computational, and quantitative methods, students are exposed to a diverse range of tools and
approaches used in the field of HRI. This not only enhances their problem-solving capabilities
but also prepares them for real-world challenges where interdisciplinary skills are highly
valued. The course is designed to cater to a specific audience—engineering students with a keen
interest in HRI. By tailoring the content to meet their needs and aspirations, the course ensures
maximum engagement and relevance. Additionally, the course format is structured to facilitate
active learning, with a mix of lectures, hands-on projects, discussions, and assessments. In
essence, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the introductory HRI course, detailing
its objectives, target audience, format, and syllabus. It underscores the importance of bridging
the gap between traditional engineering education and emerging fields like HRI, preparing
students to become adept professionals in this rapidly evolving domain.
