VI. Personal statement

Hello, this is Yan Song. I am studying Master of Education in Teaching (MET) in

Dallas Baptist University (DBU). I will graduate in May, 2023. Before coming here, I

am also a teacher in China. I sincerely believe my education in DBU can improve my

teaching in the American multicultural background. Together with my teaching

experience in my country, I have the confidence to accomplish the work in the US.

I once taught Chinese in Dixon Elementary in North Carolina from 2016 to 2019.

During this time, I attended numerous teachers’ training and seminars for experience

sharing, learned a lot of the classroom management, cultural differences and taboos. I

organized activities like making dumplings, paper folding, Chinese paintings and

bamboo dancing to help my students in Dixon Elementary understand better Chinese

language and culture. Students loved my class so much that in a research conducted by

the school administration, Chinese class ranked as the second most popular class, next

to PE. I was honored to get full scores for two successive years in teacher’s evaluation
by Mr. Reed, the principal of Dixon Elementary. I was also awarded the Best Teacher of

the Year 2018-2019 by Confucius Institution Headquarter.

Dedication to teaching mandarin Chinese has always been my dream. It will be a

great honor to work in your school and provide support to the students in their Chinese

learning.
