1.Introduction
VentilationtestobtainedforaWaldner1800widebench-mountedfumehoodwithrear
wallinstallationScala(RWI-SF-TA1800x900-900).
ThereportgivesabriefaccountonASHRAE 110-2005proceduresandrequierments
andpresentsthetestsresultsforthetestedfumehood.Thepressuredropofthefume
hood (with opened sliding window)was also measured and is represented in an
additionalpointofthereport.
2.Descriptionoffumehood
WALDNER RWI-SF-NTA 1800x900-900 bench-mountedfumehood
withrearwallinstallation
type:Secuflow
maindimensions: width 1800mm
height 2700mm
depth 900mm
ThefumecupboardtoppanelisequippedwithtwoDN 200extractairopenings.Theextractingairis
routed through the standard WALDNER manifold with incorporated ventilation controltoacentral
ventilationconnection,250mm diameter,directedtotheabove.
Thefumecupboardmayalsobeoperatedwithaconstantairvolume.Inthiscaseitwillbeequipped
withanFAZ.
Exteriorpanelsandthetoppanelaremadeof20mm solidgradelaminateTrespaAthlonchipboard.
Theworktopataheightof900mm ismadeofa30mm thickstonewareplatewithanincreasededge
onallsidesandwithafittedairfoilcillwithincorporatedventilationslots.
Theverticallyadjustablesashismadeofanaluminium frameconstructionwiththreehorizontalcross
slidesoflaminatedsafetyglass,thatareinterlinkedonbothsidesthroughatoothedbeltwith
counterweightsandthatareequippedwithananti-skiddevice.Thethreecrossslidesofthesashare
equippedwitha4-foldcrossslidedetectiondevicethatrecognizestheopeningandclosingofthe
crossslides.Adraininggroovewithanoutletspigotroutedtotheinteriorislocatedontheinnersideof
thelowersashframe.Inclosedpositionthesashispositionedtotheairfoilcillonthefrontedgeofthe
work-benchinsuchawaythatincaseofpossibleaccidentssplashes,splintersorsimilararedeviated
tothefloorina90°angle.Theverticalsashisequippedwithastoppertopreventthesashbeing
openedbeyondthemostextremesashopening.Thisstoppermaybedeliberatelyrepealedbythe
user.Thedesignofthesashstopperguaranteesthatthesashstopperwillbeautomaticallyresetwhen
repealedassoonasthesashisputinapositionbelowthemostextremesashopening.
Therearpanelofthefumecupboardinteriorhousesthreeexchangeableservicepanelswhichcanbe
equippedwitheitherservicefittingsoracupsink.Thefumecupboardwastestedinnon-equipped
state.
Duetothegeometryoftheaeriferouspartsofthefumecupboardanaircirculationisdevelopedinthe
fumecupboardinteriorwhichhorizontalaxisisapproximatelyinthecenterofthefumecupboard.
Additionalroom airisblown in on the side pillarsand on the airfoilcillvia an incorporated fan
(supportiveflow technology).Astheincomingairisdirectlysittingonthesidepanelsandonthe
worktopnocontaminantsmayflowwithintheseparationvortexfrom thefumecupboardinteriortothe
frontedgesofthepillarandoftheworktop.
Ifthesashandthehorizontalsashareinclosedpositionatthesametimeortheairexchangerateis
smallerthan150m³/h,theintegratedfanisswitchedoff.
Abypasssystem abovethesashmakessurethatthefacevelocityattheairfoilcillisreducedwhenin
closedsashposition.

Asthefumecupboardisdivided,thecompletepre-installedfumecupboardtopcanbeputeitherona
self-supportingunderbenchunitoronasteelframe.
Extendableorstationaryunderbenchunitscanbepositionedbelowtheworktop.
Thefumecupboardhasaclearinteriorheightof1550mm.

2.3Hoodconditions
Thetestedfumehoodisequippedwithcombinationsashes(verticalsashwiththree
horizontalglasses)andavariable-air-volume.Withregardtothesedesigncharacteristics
thefumehoodwastestedforsashpositionsaccordingtoASHRAE110-2005.The
individualsashpositions(verticalandhorizontal)aredescribedintherelevanttestsand
arefurtherclarifiedinsketches.
Thedesignedopenworkingheight(vertical)is457mm (18”)abovetheworktop.The
designedopenworkingwidth(horizontal)is:
960mm leftside
465mm middle
960mm rightside
Theheightofalshorizontalsashsis: 760mm
Thefumehoodwastestedwithouttestset-ups(asmanufactured).
ThefumehoodwasoperatedwithaVAVcontrollerduringthetest.Theairflowshavebeen
adjustedasfollows:
Vmax: 720m³/h(facevelocity0.2m/s/40fpm)/
1020m³/h(facevelocity0.3m/s/60fpm)
Vmin: 200m³/h

3.Testconditons
3.1Testlabconditions
TheTestroom facilitiesincludeextractandsupplyairsystemswhichcanberunat
variablespeedandtemperature.Theauxiliaryairsystem hasitsownfan,damperand
header,soitisguaranteedthattheairconditionsareuniform duringthetests.Theair
temperature inside the facility,pressure difference,velocityandhumiditywerenoted
downduringthetest.
Theairflowofexhaustandsupplyairwasmeasuredwithorificeplatesaccordingtothe
requirementsofDIN1952(Measurementoffluidflowbymeansoforificeplates,nozzles
andventuritubesinsertedincircularcross-sectionconduitsrunningfull).
The room supply airis routed through a rectangularpanelled box with standard
perforationwithafreeprofileof40%.
Themaximum crosscurrentsinanarea1.5m from thefaceofthehoodwerenogreater
than0.15m/s(30fpm)andthepressuredifferentialbelowthestaticpressureoutsidethe
testroom wascontrolledto5Pa(0.02in.w.g.)below thestaticpressureoutsidethe
testroom.
Foreachtesttheprocessvaluesofcrosscurrentsandpressurearenotedwiththetest
results.

3.3Testsystem
3.3.1Tracergassystem
Sulphurhexafluoridewasusedastracergas(forcertificateofanalysispleaseseeannexA).
Forthetesttheejectorwassuppliedwiththetracergasfrom agascylinder(40kg)viaa
measuringandcontrolunitandviablockvalves.Acontrolunitkeptthesetgasflowof
4l(standard)/min.constant.Theejectorsystem utilizedwassetupaccordingtoASHRAE
110-2005.Thepressuregaugeandtheblockvalvearenotdirectlyaddedtotheejectorto
avoiddisturbancesoftheairflow.Thesizeoftheorificeusedwas0.64mm.

4.1Flowvisualization
4.1.1Purpose
Thistestisavisualisationofthehood’sabilitytocontainvapours.Thetestconsistsof
both,asmalllocalchallengeandagrosschallenge,tothehood.Itisthepurposeofthis
testtorenderanobservationofthehoodperformanceasitistypicallyused.Smokewas
usedtovisualizetheairflowinthefumehoodduringthesetests.
4.1.2Lowvolumesmoketesting
4.1.2.1Procedure
Alow-volumesmoketestingonthefollwingdecivespertheprocedureandcriterialisted
Belowwereconducted.Theaccompanyingtablewasusedtorecordtheresults.Asmall
amountofwhite,thermalinactivefogwasproducedbyusinfFCSFlowMarker.This
smoke(fog)sourceismovedaroundtheperimeterofthesashopening,intheplaneof
thesash,whiletheflowpatterns,nowvisible,areobserved.Theratingcriteriaforthe
testare:
4.1.2.2Ratingctiteria
Good:Goodcaptureandquickclearance,limited hoodrollvortex,noreverseflowregions,
novisibleescape.Forquantitativeanalysisofalargepopulation,thisratingassigned
avalueofzero.
Fair: Somereverseflowsnotnecessarilyattheopening,limitedturbulentvortexinhood,
allsmokecapturedandclearedreadily,tovisibleescape.Forquantitativeanalysisof
alargepopulation,thisratingassignedavalueofone.
Poor: Reverseflowsnearopening,lazyflowintohoodaroundopeningboundary,slow
captureandclearance,observedpotentialforescape.Forquantitativeanalysisofa
largepopulation,thisratingassignedavalueoftwo.

4.1.3.1Procedure
Theprocedureofhigh-volumesmoketestingonthefollowingdevicewasconductedand
the criteria are listed below.The accompanying table records the results.Copiuos
amountssmoke were generated using a SAFEX fog generator.The smoke (fog)is
releasedatalow velocityintothefumehoodfrom theendofaflexiblehose,covered
with an aluminum tube and gasketsimilarthe ejectorsystem asdescribed forthe
containmenttestsinASHRAE standard110-2005andtheflow patternsareobserved.
Theobservationswereclassifiedusingthefollowingcriteria.
4.1.3.2Ratingcriteria
Good:Goodcaptureandquickclearance,limited hoodrollvortex,noreverseflowregions,
novisibleescape.Forquantitativeanalysisofalargepopulation,thisratingassigned
avalueofzero.
Fair: Somereverseflowsnotnecessarilyattheopening,limitedturbulentvortexinhood,
allsmokecapturedandclearedreadily,tovisibleescape.Forquantitativeanalysisof
alargepopulation,thisratingassignedavalueofone.
Poor: Reverseflowsnearopening,lazyflowintohoodaroundopeningboundary,slow
captureandclearance,observedpotentialforescape.Forquantitativeanalysisofa
largepopulation,thisratingassignedavalueoftwo.
Fail: Visible escape ofsmoke from hood into room thatis notrecaptured.For
quantitativeanalysisofalargepopulation,thisratingassignedavalueofthree.(

Thistestisusedtodeterminehow accuratelythefacevelocitycontrolsrespondatthe
differentplanesoftheslidingsash.Facevelocitytraversesarerunat100%,50% and
25% ofthedesignopeningandtheaveragevelocityresultsarecompared.
4.2.1.2Procedure
Thesashopeningsweredividedintoanimaginarygridbyequallydividingtheopenings
intoverticalandhorizontaldimensions.Theprobeswereplacedinthecenterofeach
gridbox.Thegridwaspositionedinthecenterofthehoodopeningintheplaneofthe
sashwiththeprobesperpendiculartotheopening.
Velocityreadingsweretakenoncepersecondovera20secondperiodpertraverse
point.
Theusedcalibratedanemometerisdescripedinchapter„3.3Testsystem“.
Foreachsashposition,theaverageofthefacevelocitymeasurements,andthehighest
andlowestreadingswerecalculatedandrecorded.

4.2.2.1Purpose
Thistestmeasuresthetimerequiredforthefacevelocitytorecoverto90% ofthemean
afterarapidsashopening.Therearetwocomponentstothisresponsetime.Oneisthe
speedatwhichtheVAVcontrolcanrespondtothesashmovementandtheotheristhe
inertiaoftheroom air,hoodair,andtheexhaustsystem.
4.2.2.2Procedure
Thevelocityprobewasclampedinthebackofthefumehoodintoabaffleslot.The
locationwasadjustedsothatthereadingsdonotexceedtherangeofthetransducerat
a100% designsashopening.Inthispositionthereadingisalwaysproportionaltothe
fumehoodflowrate.
ForfumecupboardswithVAVsystem theresponsetimeofttheVAVsystem shallbetested.
TheASHRAEStandard110-2005describestwodifferentmethodshowthedatashallbe
taken.Hereavelocitysensorwasplacedinanopeninginthebaffle,andthedatawere
continuouslycollectedintheconnectedPC.
Asapracticalresulttheresponsetimeshallbenotmorethan5secondstoreach90% ofthe
finalvaluewhenopeningthesash.Furtheronthetimeforsteadystateshallbegivenaswell
astherepeatabilityfortheresults.
Note:Theopeningofthesash isdonebyahumanoperate,whichgivessometolerancein
thetimeofstartaswellinthespeedofsashopening.Additional,astheresponsetimeis
alsoinfluencedbytheductpressureandambientconditionstheshowndatashallonlybe
regardedasatypicalresult.
ThefollowingtablesshowsthecomprehendedresultsfortheVAVsystem setat0.2m/sand
0,3m/s.

4.3Tracergastests
4.3.1Tracergascontainment
4.3.1.1Purpose
Intheseteststhecontainmentofthefumehoodistestedundervariousconditions.The
containmentisadecisivefiguretojudgetheworkingsafetyachievedwiththefume
hood.
4.3.1.2Procedure
Totestthefumehooditisoperatedwithtype-specificstandardairvolumes.Inthe
interiorofthefumehoodtracergasisreleasedandtheworkingareainfrontofthehood
ischeckedforemergingparticlesofthistracergas.
AccordingtotherequirementsofASHRAE110-2005thefollowingtestwascarriedout.
Theejectorwasinstalledattestposition.Fortypicalbenchtypehoods,threepositions
wererequired:left,center,andrightasseenwhenlookingintothehood.Theleftposition
waswiththeejectorcenterline300mm (12in.)from theleftinsidewallofthehood,the
centerpositionwasequidistantfrom theinsidesidewalls,andtherightpositionwas
300mm (12in.)from therightinsidewall.Allpositionswerewiththefrontoftheejector
body150mm (6in.)from thehoodface.
Theprobewaspositionedinthebreathingzoneofthemanikin,withthebreathingzone
ofthemanikin75mm (3in.)from theplaneofthesash.
Thedetectorprobewasfixedinapositiontouchingthefaceofthemanikinintheregion
ofthebreathingzone,withthecenteroftheprobe560mm (22in.)abovethework
surfaceand75mm (3in.)infrontofthesash(fordetailspleaseseesketch4inthis
chapter).Thedetectorprobewasattachedtothemanikin.Carewastakentoensurethat
anymethodofattachingthedetectorprobeinthebreathingzoneofthemanikin
wasnotinterferedwiththeflowpatternsaroundthemanikinorprobe.

(horizontallyandvertically)effectstheretainingpower(containment)andthusalsothe
workingsafetyofthefumehoodtestedinthesetests.
4.3.2.2Procedure
AccordingtotherequirementsofASHRAE110-2005chapter8.3thefollowingtestwas
carriedout:
Themanikinandtheejectorwerelocatedontheappropriatetestpositions(bothleft,
bothcenterandbothright,seesketches5and6).Theblockvalvewasopenedandthe
sashwasclosed.Afteraperiodof1minutethesashwasopenedfrom closedpositionto
itsmaximum openingheightataspeedof1m/swhilethetestgaswasreleasedandthe
testgasconcentrationrecorded.Afteranotherperiodof1minutethesashwasclosed.
Thisprocedurewascarriedouttwicewhilethetestgasconcentrationwasrecorded
continuously.Thiscyclewasrepeatedforthehorizontalsashes.Analysisismade
throughacontinuouslyrollingaveragevalueof45sec.Themaximum rollingaverage
valueiscalculatedanddisplayed.

donewithoutdummystandinginthefront.Whilestandingawayfrom thefaceofthehood,
theprobeisheldabout25mm from theinnerborderofthehoodopeningandslowlymoved
aroundtheopeningatarateapprox.75mm persecond.Theconcentrationismeasured
continuousandrecordedoverthetime.
Note:Theperipheraltraversedatacanbeusedasadiagnostictooltodeterminepotential
leakagepoints.Butthereissignificantpotentialofvariationinthetraverseresultsdueto
