Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Gebyar Indonesia 2023’s main performance. Tonight, we
will show you a glimpse of a beautiful Indonesian culture. You might be familiar with the
islands of Java and Bali, but Indonesia is much more than these two islands. On the West
side of Indonesia is the big island of Sumatra. Home to many different cultures, ethnicity,
and traditions. One of Indonesia’s ethnic culture groups is based on the North of this island.
The Batak Culture.

Batak Culture is rooted deeply in long-historical traditions. However, modern Batak culture
in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a blend of tradition and contemporary influences. Batak
people remain connected to their cultural heritage through traditional music, dance, and art.
Modern Batak culture holds strong family values and social bonds. The Batak people
maintain close-knit family networks, with extended families often living in the same vicinity
or even in the same house, fostering a sense of unity and support.

Batak people respect their elders, and the wisdom of older family members is highly
regarded. Marriage remains a big part of modern Batak culture, as it is often seen as a union
of not only two individuals but two families. Furthermore, the concept of gotong royong, or
mutual cooperation, is deeply ingrained in Batak society. It encourages the spirit of
communal collaboration and helping one another, particularly in times of need….

Rose : (masuk sambil marah-marah) Oh my gosh! Can you stop talking already? We
get it, you’re the narrator of the story!
Dalang : (kaget) Rose? It’s not your turn yet, go back! (usir-usir)
Rose : Haish, everyone here wants the story to start already! What are you even
explaining about anyways?
Dalang : I’m explaining the cultural value behind tonight’s story. Just wait for your
turn, lah!
Rose : Huh? Everyone in Indonesia already knows about the beautiful Batak culture
of North Sumatra.
Dalang : Yeah, well not everyone is from Indonesia today. (tunjuk-tunjuk) Look-look!
So many people came today to enjoy the show. So, just wait your turn and don’t ruin the
show.
Rose : Hmmm, you’re right but… hearing you talk is too boring. (ngide) Aha! Let’s
just sing a beautiful song from my culture, how about that? That way, everyone can already
see the beauty of Batak culture of Indonesia!
Dalang : Sing? Umm, (baca script) this is not how the show is supposed to go…

#Nantulang Sinta and villagers are talking by themselves, Tari and Rose is ready at stage-
side#

Tari : (sambil masuk) Another year, another one of these annual festivals. (dreamy
sigh) I’ll never get tired of this. I love my town so much.
Rose : I know, right? They worked so hard this year to make a great festival.
Tari : Can you believe it has been two years since the last one? I miss seeing
everyone like this.
(Nantulang Sinta notices Tari and Rose, goes to greet them both)
Sinta : Hi-hi Tari and Rose! You both look so pretty today! (sambil mau peluk Tari
and Rose)
Tari : Nantulang! Aw, thank you! You’re also very pretty today.
Rose : Nantulang Sinta! It’s been a while. Are you doing well? Everyone healthy at
home?
Sinta : Ah, yes! (nada ngegibah) Actually I’ve been so busy lately. Maybe not as
busy as the future college graduates but I’m busy, nonetheless.
Tari : Hahah, yeah college is going crazy right now. But atleast I’m not as busy as
this future nurse right here! (nunjuk Rose)
Rose : (gamau dipuji gitu) Aw, speak for yourself! (ngomong ke Nantulang) She
actually just started her thesis, Nantulang. She’s just trying to be humble.
Sinta : Amang tahe, these smart girls! Eh, actually Tari, I’ve been meaning to ask
you. Your study programme is Agrotech, right? At USU?
Tari : That’s right, Nantulang! Why?
Sinta : Eyy, that’s perfect! Actually, my nephew is going there for the same
programme.
Tari : Really? That’s cool! Is he a bachelors student?
Sinta : No, no! He’s a couple years older than you, so he’s starting he’s masters!
(celingak-celinguk) Actually, where is he anyways? Wait here, let me find him and introduce
him to you.
Tari : (sungkan gitu) Eh? No need to bother.
Sinta : It’s okay! You need to meet him! (nyari-nyari) Ugh, where is that boy? (jalan
pergi keluar buat cari Sembiring)
Tari : Nooo wait! (reach out tapi Nantulang Sinta udah pergi, balik ngomong ke
Rose) Haish, these aunties are so energetic.
Rose : (shrug) Eh, I think you should meet him. If he’s in Agrotech maybe you two
will be friends!
(Nantulang Sinta datang sambil narik si Sembiring)
Sinta : Nahhh, here he is! Tari and Rose please meet my nephew, Sembiring!
Sembiring this is the town’s smartest and prettiest girls, Tari and Rose!
Rose : (nada kyk abis digombalin, Rose ke depan buat mau salaman sama
Sembiring) Ish Nantulang, I know I’m so… (nadanya kyk mengecil, terkesima sama
Sembiring)
Sembiring : (nervous) Ahahah, yes hello, I’m Sembiring. I just moved here to Nantulang’s
house to study in USU.
(Rose terkesima)
Tari : Hi, Sembiring! I’m Tari, I’m techinically your junior in USU.
Sembiring : Oh, really? You’re also taking Agrotech?
Tari : Yep!
Sembiring : Rose as well? (ngomong ke Rose, Rose masih bengong terkesima) Emm,
Rose?
Rose : (baru nyadar) Huh? Oh yea-yea! I mean, no-no! I mean, I’m also studying at
USU but I’m in the nursing school.
Sembiring : Wow, a future nurse huh? That’s really cool.
Rose : (kaget, seneng dipuji Sembiring) Ahahaaa… yea…. Very cool.
Tari : (bingung ini temennya kenapa si) Rose? Are you okay? Are you hungry or
something?
Rose : (malu-malu) No-no! I’m not hungry! (bunyi perut)
Tari : Eyyy, you’re totally hungry! (ngomong ke Nantulang dan Sembiring) She’s
always like this when she’s hungry. Let’s go find something to eat.
Sinta : Go eat, lah! I heard Nantulang Jojo made chicken pinadar. Eat before it’s all
finished!
Sembiring : True! I just ate earlier and it was so good. I miss Batak food so much.
Rose : (kecewa bakal pisah sama Sembiring) Aww, you just ate? I can’t eat without
you, Sembiring…
Tari : (bingung) What are you talking about? Anyways, let’s goo! I need food!
(pergi sambil ajak Rose)
Rose : (masih pengen balik) Aw, noooo. Sembiring nooo…
(Rose dan Tari pergi dari panggung)
Sinta : Aww, those sweet girls really remind me of my youth. (ngomong ke
Sembiring) OH! What do you think of Tari, Sembiring?
Sembiring : Tari? Well, she seems nice. Why?
Sinta : Nice? Only nice?? Are you sure?
Sembiring : Well… (malu2) she’s also really pretty. And if she’s in Agrotech, that probably
means she’s smart too.
Sinta : Oh, you have no idea! That girl is one the best in town, in everything! She’s
also an environmental activist, you know!
Sembiring : Oh yeah? That’s super cool.
Sinta : I’m so glad she’s not like her father… (den-den)
Sembiring : Her father? What’s wrong with her father?
Sinta : Well, her father is the crazy rich businessman of this town. He owns a lot of
properties, businesses, and he also has a law firm. Between you and me, he’s kind of an idiot
though… so crazy about money…
Sembiring : A lot of properties and businesses? How rich are they?
Sinta : They’re super rich, he can maybe buy this entire town 3 times over.
Sembiring : (takut) Oh, damn that’s a lot of money then…
Sinta : But, Tari is nothing like her father! (toel2) She’s also single, loh… You said
she’s pretty, you both go to the same school, doing the same program. Go for it!
Sembiring : (kaget) Oh! I don’t know! She’s really pretty but I don’t really have
anything…
Sinta : I told you she’s nothing like her father! Tari is a nice girl. (sambil siap2 keluar)
Sembiring : Hmm… let’s just see, lah… (keluar)

Dalang : Sembiring, impressed with the perfect Tari, is excited to start his life in his
new town. Meanwhile, Tari’s father, Pak Raja, the town’s richest businessman, is having a
meeting with a famous investor, Pak Vektor. During this beautiful festival, the two men is
discussing what to do with Pak Raja’s land near Toba Lake.

#Pak Raja and Pak Vektor are sitting on the middle 2 chairs, holding drinks and (maybe)
smoking#

Pak Vektor : So, how’s business going, Pak Raja? Decided on what to do with your land
already? I need to close the deal soon.
Pak Raja : Business is smooth as usual. And about that land… I thought my assistants
wrote a report already.
Pak Vektor : Yeah? Mantap kali! So, give me the details. Did you agree with my proposal
to build a resort?
Pak Raja : I did, I think it’s a good idea. I have had that land for a long time, it was an
inheritance from my great-grandfather. I think it’s time we put that land to good use.
Pak Vektor : Hahaha… I am happy to hear that. That land is a treasure, I tell you! It’s
located in such a strategic part of Toba Lake. If you build a resort there, there will be tourist
everywhere, EVERYWHERE!
Pak Raja : Aish… there is a lot of resorts already near Toba Lake. Do you think another
one will be special?
Pak Vektor : Of course it will be! Especially when it’s built by your famous corporation.
With my investments, there’s no chance for the others.
Pak Raja : (sedikit unsure) True… but that land is quite special…
Pak Vektor : Don’t worry, Pak Raja. Everything you do is always a success. I mean, (tunjuk-
tunjuk sekitar) even this festival is a success. I knew it was you!
Pak Raja : Hmm… speaking of the festival, I better check on everyone’s condition.
(manggil) Jono! (tapi salah panggilan) Naji!
(Jono dan Naji masuk panggung)
Naji, Jono : Siap!
Jono : Eh, by the way, Pak. It’s pronounced Yono, not Jono.
Pak Raja : Oh sorry Yono, then your name is Nayi then?
Naji : Huh? Of course not, my name is Naji! N-A-J-I. Naji
Pak Raja : Haish, so complicated. Your name has the letter J, why is it Yono not Jono?
Anyways, how’s everything going? Any problems, fights, or marriage proposals?
Naji, Jono : No, Sir!
Naji : Everything is going well. I saw everyone including Tari happily enjoying the
festival.
Jono : Oh, actually… about Tari… there is something.
Pak Raja : (Panik) What? What about my daughter? Did something happen?
Jono : No-no, nothing big. I just saw her talking with Nantulang Sinta.
Pak Raja : (denger Sinta langsung marah, kyk siap untuk berantem) Sinta?? What does
she want with my daughter??
Naji : Well actually, I heard her nephew just moved to town.
Pak Vektor : Woah, Pak Raja. I’ve never seen you so emotional before. What’s wrong with
Nantulang Sinta anyways?
^Sound: Dramatic sound effect^
Pak Raja : (slowly menghadap ke Pak Vektor) You don’t know about Sinta? Hah!
HAHAHAH let me tell you the story about the terrible, terrible tragedy.
^Lights out, Spotlight to Pak Raja^
(Jono and Naji kipas2 Pak Raja)
Pak Raja : (solemn) Once upon a time, I was young and rich, not so tall and handsome,
charismatic boy. At the age of 17, I just bought my first car, a Lamborghini. I was so happy,
the happiest I can be for a boy my age.
Pak Vektor : (bingung) You bought a lambo when you were 17?
Pak Raja : (ignoring Vektor) I took my baby out for a ride through town. And then, that
terrible woman shows up. She ruined everything!
Pak Vektor : How?
Pak Raja : She was riding in her motorcycle. And in one the busy road, she swerved
right next to me. And… she scratched my baby. (nungguin reaksi)
Jono, Naji : (dramatic gasp, upset)
^Lights come back on, dramatic music stops^
Pak Vektor : …and then?
Pak Raja : What do you mean “and then?”? That’s it! She scratched my lambo! My first
car! Using her motorcycle!
Pak Vektor : Aren’t you being dramatic about this?
Pak Raja : Ghhh… you just don’t understand! Anyways, back on the topic, what did
Sinta say to my daughter?
Jono : (kaget) Uhhh… her nephew. Apparently, he’s starting his master’s at USU.
He’s in the same study as Tari.
Pak Raja : Hah! Hahahah… I bet that’s not the only reason why he’s talking to Tari. Tari
is a perfect girl! I bet he’s eyeing her already. What’s his name?
Naji : Sembiring, I think.
Pak Raja : Alright, fine! I would like to meet this Sembiring guy. Set up a dinner with
him! Just you wait, Nantulang Sinta… I will take my revenge!
Pak Vektor : What about the resort?
Pak Raja : (baru nyadar) Oh yeah, I’ll let you know soon. I just need to talk to Tari about
this first. Actually, Jono Naji please invite Tari to the dinner too. She can bring her friend.
Pak Vektor : Oh actually, can you call Tari here? It’s been a while since I saw her.
Naji, Jono : (hormat) Siap, Pak Raja! (keluar panggung)

Dalang : And so Jono and Naji are on their way to set up a dinner with Pak Raja,
Sembiring, and Tari. They found Tari and Rose still eating their delicious Chicken Pinandar.

Sembiring : Hey, Tari. You’re still eating, huh? Is it good?
Tari : Goshh, the chicken tastes amazing. Too bad it’s all finished. I could’ve gone
for a third plate.
(Naji and Jono goes in, baris-berbaris, Sembiring kaget)
Naji : Siaaap, grak! Maju… jalan!
^Sound: Baris berbaris, footsteps^
Tari : (kaget) Uhh… Naji and Jono! What are you doing?”
Jono : (formal) Miss Tari! Mister Sembiring (Naji keluarin scroll trus taro didepan
Jono) I hereby invite you to a special, very important dinner. Your presence is deemed
mandatory, and only acceptance is allowed. Do you accept?
Tari : What the? (bingung) Did my father sent you?
Jono : Affirmative!
Tari : Ugh, could he be a normal dad once in a while… what’s the occasion?
Naji : The objective of the dinner is classified. Please just follow the orders!
Sembiring : (masih bingung) Tari, do you know these people?
Tari : Yeah… Sembiring please meet Naji and Jono (pronounciationnya bener). Naji
and Jono please meet Sembiring, he’s new in town but I guess you know that already.
Sembiring : (awkward) Uhh… Hi, I’m Sembiring…
Jono : Welcome to town Sembiring (shake hand sama Sembiring, tapi ga selesai-
selesai).
Tari : Anyways, sure I’ll be there in the dinner. Is it in my house? Sembiring, will
you go too? I’m not sure what my father wants to talk about but I suggest you just go with it.
He’s a stubborn man.”
Sembiring : (lepasin tangan) Yeah, yeah. I guess I’ll go.
Tari : Rose can come to, right?
Naji : Amazing! And yes, Rose is also invited to come. Now, Jono and I need to
accompany you, Tari. Aaand, your presence is waited by your father.
Tari : Can you cut that formal speaking already? I get it, father wants to talk to me,
right? Let’s go… Oh and Sembiring, if you see Rose can you let her know about the dinner?
Naji, Jono : (interupsi) Yosh, ikuzooo... yeaaah banzaaai! (mereka bertiga keluar
panggung) (2-3 dtik)
Sembiring : Hey, what about me? Am I left alone? (2-3 dtk)
(Rose manggil dari samping)
Rose : Oh, Sembiring!!! Theree you are! (masuk panggung) Why are you alone?
Sembiring : Hi, Rose! Tari was just here with his dad’s assistance team. But they left to
talk to her father.
Rose : Oh, hahahah that’s so funny (flirting dikit). Anyways, what are you going to
do now?
Sembiring : Actually, Rose while you’re here, you’re invited to a dinner. Are you going?
Rose : Whaaaat? (flustered) Oh my, you’re asking me out to dinner already? Geez,
you move fast, Sembiring. But, of course! I will go to dinner with you!
Sembiring : Hahahah (nervous laughter)? I’ll text you the location then.
Rose : Can’t wait!!! Anyways, I was about to invite you to spend the rest of the
festival together. The ending performance is almost here! Do you want to watch with me?
Sembiring : Sure! I’d be delighted. Lead the way!
Rose : Perfect, let’s gooooo! (keluar berdua)

Dalang : Everything went well. However, behind those smiles, Sembiring is nervous to
finally meet Tari’s father. Rose, on the other hand, is happy to be invited to a dinner with
Sembiring. But all of that aside, the festival has almost ended. So please, let’s enjoy the
festival ending together.

Dalang : With that, this year’s festival came to a close. Our cast is now focused on
one thing, and one thing only: Pak Raja’s dinner. Pak Raja is known to use “dinner” as an
intimidation tactic to scare small business owners. But now, he’s using it to intimidate
Sembiring while talking to Tari about his plan to build a luxurious resort near Toba Lake.

Tari : (Humming an Indonesian song, sambil set-up meja) Tiffany silahkan pilih
lagu yg kamu familiar yaa!
(Rose comes in, very pretty and glamorous)
Rose : Tariii! Eh, (nyadar) wait why are you here?
Tari : Hi, Rose! Oh, my you look amazing! But, what do you mean, why? This is my
house??
Rose : Oh, yeah. I guess, it is. Huh, Sembiring chose a weird place for our date.
Tari : Rose, you’ve been to my house thousands of times since you were a little
girl. Also, a date?? With Sembiring? I’m pretty sure this is not a date.
Rose : What do you mean? Sembiring asked me out to a romantic dinner during
the festival. Did I not understand correctly?
Tari : Hahah, yeah right. The dinner is hosted my dad. If anything, you would be
having a romantic dinner with my dad!
Rose : (kecewa berat) …I can’t believe this. And I got up to do my makeup and
everything. Now you’re telling me this was just a dinner from Pak Raja? I could’ve finished
my nursing school homework instead!
Tari : Sorry to disappoint, Rose. But, my dad did invite you to a dinner. Come on,
atleast we get to eat fancy foods!
(Interupsi oleh Jono and Naji, baris-berbaris lagi)
Jono : Stand up! Greetings! (kayak sama guru gitu) Good eve-Eh wait, it’s just you
two.
Naji : Tari? You’re setting up the table? And who is that beautiful lady next to you?
Tari : Yeah, come help me will you? (diem baru nyadar) Wait,- beautiful lady?
Naji : (Lari ke Rose) Hey, girl. You must be from Bali, ‘cause you've brought a piece
of paradise with you.
Rose : (kaget) Naji, it’s just me, Rose. Are you feeling okay?
Naji : Wait, Rose?? I didn’t know you can be this- well uhh… wow… you look
amazing! I mean, wow! (stumbling on words)
Rose : Haha (sarkas) yeah, yeah make fun of me all you want. Ugh, can this dinner
be any worse?? You know what, Tari let me help you set up the table. Let’s get this dinner
over with.
Tari : Oh perfect, then follow me to the kitchen. (sambil pergi) I need to get the
spoons, glasses, pitcher… (pokoknya sambil keluar)
(Meanwhile, Naji masih bengong, terpesona)
Jono : (Jalan ke Naji) Uhh… my man, you good? You’re staring kinda creepily at
Rose just now.
Naji : Jono… Is this what they call love at first sight?
Jono : Naji, we’ve known Rose since we were little.
Naji : Well, I know but, I didn’t realise that Rose has always been that beautiful.
It’s like… (Lagu romatic starts, Naji ngepantun)
Throughout my life, she’s always been near
But her beauty now shines, crystal clear
Like a fool, I’ve never realized my luck
She’s stolen my heart, I am now love-struck
Jono : Bro, okay damn, you’re suddenly a romantic now?
Naji : (dramatic) You don’t understand, Jono! No one understands…. This feeling…

Dalang : A very lovestruck Naji finishes his song for Rose. The dinner preparation is
now completed. Pak Raja sits down, ready to “welcome” Sembiring any time.

#All dinner participants are ready on the dining room except for Sembiring#
Pak Raja : (nunjuk ke jam) Where is Sembiring? I can’t believe he is 7 seconds late
already! 8 seconds, 9 seconds, 10 seconds…
Tari : Dad, why are you being so dramatic?
Pak Raja : You know in the Netherlands this is already considered sooo late..
(Sembiring masuk)
Sembiring : (nervous) Excuse me, this is Sembiring.
Pak Raja : (bentak) HAH! You’re 14 seconds late. What kind of man is late to a formal
dinner?
Sembiring : Uhhh, this is supposed to be a formal dinner? And I was not late, I was just a
bit lost because the house is too big.
Pak Raja : Are you making up excuses just now? Just say sorry and sit down.
(Sembiring notices that the chair near Tari is empty, tries to sit there)
Pak Raja : Wait! (duduk sebelah Tari) What do you think you’re doing? Sit here! (tunjuk
ke kursi sebelah).
Sembiring : Oh, sorry. (duduk, followed by Rose, Naji, and Jono)
Tari : (disbelief) Are you going to tell us what this dinner’s about already?
Pak Raja : Hmm? To welcome Sembiring to our town, of course!
Tari : What?? That’s not true. You never do this to anyone moving to town.
Pak Raja : No-no, I’m showing my hospitality. Sembiring (ngomong ke Sembiring) I just
wanted to let you know the way the town works a bit. Maybe you’ve heard, but a big portion
of this town is thanks to our family. The supermarket, the coffee factory, the local restaurant
chain, is all owned by our corporation. I just want you to realise this.
Sembiring : Uhh… okay? I did hear from Nantulang Sinta-
Pak Raja : (interupsi) Don’t! Don’t speak of that name in my house.
Rose : Okay, now I’m curious. What is going on?
Naji : It’s a long story, Rose. Do you want me to tell you?
(Naji, Rose, Jono ngobrol2 ber3)
Pak Raja : Anyways, on another more important note. Tari (noleh ke Tari), I have
something for you too.
Tari : What is it now?
Pak Raja : Remember the land we own near the Toba Lake? Well, I’ve decided to build
a luxurious resort there, Pak Vektor is investing. Amazing, right?
Tari : (kaget) Wait, wait, wait. The land near Toba Lake? The one from my great-
great grandfather? You’re going to destroy it?
Pak Raja : Not destroy, I’m using it for a better cause. Besides, that land is just trees
and nature, boring!
Tari : (debat) Nature is not boring! It’s a very important part of our ecosystem!
Besides, we don’t need more resorts near Toba Lake! There are plenty small family-owned
business keeping that spot alive. Why are you destroying that?
Pak Raja : I am not destroying anything! If anything, I’m stimulating the local economy.
Why are you debating me on this?
Tari : It’s always money with you, don’t you think we have enough? And that
land… that’s from our ancestor! You’re just going to make it into a resort?
Pak Raja : It’s not just a resort, it’s a luxurious resort made by your father’s
corporation. Ugh, why are you arguing with me anyways! Everyone keeps on annoying me!
(marah) And you! (tunjuk ke Sembiring) Don’t you think I don’t know why you’re
approaching my daughter!
Sembiring : (kaget) Me? What’s wrong with me?
Pak Raja : You’re planning on marrying my daughter! And don’t deny it, my daughter is
perfect! You’re just planning on taking her away from me and making her hate her father.
Sembiring : But, I didn’t do anything…

Act 6: Dinner Aftermath
Dalang : After Tari’s abrupt declaration, the dinner quickly went south. Everyone feels
upset and angry at Tari. Pak Raja went to sleep, and Sembiring went home. Tari felt everyone
was unfair to her and never listened to what she had to say. Meanwhile, Rose ran outside,
followed by Jono and Naji. She’s heartbroken, thinking that her best friend took her love
interest.

Rose : (ngomong ke audience) Tonight was terrible. I really thought I was going to a
dinner date with Sembiring. Imagine my surprise when it was just a regular dinner. And
Sembiring was not even the one inviting me to the dinner! Ugh, and then there is the whole
argument with Tari. How could she do that? She must know that I have a crush on
Sembiring! I know she’s perfect but what’s wrong with me? I’m a catch too! …who am I
kidding, I’m just pretending that I’m one level with Tari. My name is not even Rose! It’s
actually Rosmaidah, but Rose sounds cooler, doesn’t it?/
Rose : (nafas dulu) It’s so frustrating because I love Tari too, you know? We’ve been
friends since we were little girls, and now we’re adults! I don’t know what to do! I know

Rose : I also apologize for overreacting. I know you didn’t mean to steal my love, I

Rose : Pak Raja, your turn!

realise that was a big mistake for me. You’re the best daughter a father could have. I promise

Pak Raja : Come on, let’s go home.

Dalang :

At last, the group ends the night by making up with each other. After this fateful night, Pak
Raja now listens to people more, and he cares more about the environment. Rose and Naji
started dating, and they’re busy being future nurses and lawyers. Jono is just happy to be
there. Tari is delighted that she gets to keep her inherited land and made sure it will stay as
natural as long as possible. Lastly, Sembiring proved himself to Pak Raja and got his approval
to date Tari.
