What do you do to find the meaning of the unfamiliar words you

Activity 1 Let us read the story below.

Fat Girl

“You better run fat girl,” shouted a rude fifth grade student from the
window of the yellow school bus.
Isabel Cena was running to catch up with the bus as it began to
pull away. When she made it to the steps of the bus, she was sweaty
and embarrassed. Isabel willed herself not to cry as she walked down
the narrow aisle of the school bus.
Isabel was completely abashed; she held her face down as the
bus erupted in laughter. She wished that she could make herself
disappear.
The ride to school was the longest of her life. People were still
giggling as they got off the bus and headed into Sta. Ana Central
Elementary School.
Isabel met up with her best friends Kristen Ito and Eric Abcede in
the canteen. The three of them had been best friends since second
grade, and they called themselves the United Nations. They all
originated from different countries. Isabel, who was born in Thailand,
was adopted when she was three. Eric’s parents emigrated from Nigeria,
and Kristen’s grandparents emigrated from Japan.
“Why so glum, chum?” asked Kristen as Isabel sat down beside
her at the canteen table. Kristen was eating a biscuit and a doughnut.
That girl seemed to always be eating, and she never gained weight. She
was a size zero on her heaviest day.
“Nothing,” she said. “I am just tired. I stayed up all night studying
for my Math exam.”
“I know when there is something wrong with you,” said Eric with his
soft musical Nigerian accent. “And it is more than Math exam.” “Yeah,
you are a beast in Math,” said Kristen, who had no trace of Japan in her
voice.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” she said as her eyes began to water.
She tried to look away, but it was too late. Eric had seen her sad brown
eyes. “I am just tired of being fat,” she said. Then she told them what
had happened on the bus earlier that morning. By the time she finished
telling the story, Kristen was in tears. Eric put his arms around her and
said, “It will be all right; we love you.” “Yeah, we love you,” echoed
Kristen.
The bell rang. As Eric gathered his books to leave for his first
period class, he gave Isabel a hug. “It will be all right, friend; I will fix this
for you.” “Thanks Eric,” said Isabel as she headed to her Math class.
When she got into the class, she squeezed herself into the desk and
waited for Ms. Cruz to begin.
“All right guys, clear your desks,” she said cheerfully. “This test
will probably take the whole class period.” Isabel loved Math. Finally, the
world made sense. She finished her test with about 10 minutes to spare;
then she looked over her answers. Just as Isabel was about to check
over her work for the third time, the bell rang. As Isabel handed Ms. Cruz
her test, she smiled because she knew she had aced that test. “You are
smiling too hard,” Ms. Cruz joked. “I knew this test was too easy.”
However, Isabel’s happiness was ephemeral. As soon as she
walked out of into the hall, she realized that she was back in the cruel
world. After second period, Isabel headed to the canteen to meet Eric for
lunch. Before they knew it, the bell rang; lunch, was over. Isabel headed
to her class again. She was filled with such fear that she could not focus
on the lessons. She could only think of the cruel laughter that would
taunt her on the bus.
When the final bell rang, Isabel rushed to the bus. She was trying
to be the first person there; she was hoping that no one would notice
her. When she got there, there were only two or three students on the
bus. They were too busy with their smart phones to pay her any
attention. Isabel breathed a momentary sigh of relief as she sat down in
the very back of the bus.
A few minutes later, she heard a familiar Nigerian voice. “Is this
seat taken?” “Why are you riding this bus?” “I told you I was going to fix
the problem?” “But Eric, you can’t fix this problem,” she said. “You
need…” Before she could finish her sentence, the rude fifth grade
student walked on the bus. He wanted to pick up where he left off. “Hey,
where’s that big girl at…” As soon as he got the words out of his mouth,
Eric talked. “Oh, no, do not ever say that to my friend.” Eric confronted
the boy. He explained why it is bad to bully someone. The boy was
ashamed of what he did. Everybody in the bus were looking at the boy.
Isabel felt relieved as the boy started to ask apologies for what he did.
Isabel hugged her friend and thanked him for what he did.

What is It

Let’s Discuss!
The most common difficulty that learners like you encounter is when you
come across words that are difficult to understand or words that you are
not familiar with. Just like in the story you have read, there are words
that are unfamiliar to you.
There are many ways to get the meaning of words. The use of
references like the dictionary, thesaurus or even searching though online
resources will make you understand words easily.
• Dictionaries and thesauri are reference books for words.
• A dictionary contains alphabetical list of words that includes
the meaning, etymology and pronunciation.
• Thesaurus is a book that contains synonyms and even
antonyms. It is a book that contains words that can be used
in place of another word.
• Aside from using printed dictionaries and the thesaurus, you
may also consult reliable online sources available like
vocabulary.com, BBC Learning English and many other
online dictionaries or thesaurus.
For example, in looking for the meaning of the word marvellous using the
web, you may get results such as this:

Source:
https://www.google.com/search?q=marvellous&source=lmns&bih=657&biw=1366&hl=en&sa=X&ve
d=2ahUKEwjMv4mmuufqAhWKEKYKHU01B08Q_AUoAHoECAEQAA

What kind of word is marvellous?

How many meanings does it have?
In the phrase, God’s creation is marvellous, which meaning fits the
italicized word?
I had a marvelous trip. Which among its synonyms can you use to
replace it?
REMEMBER
In using printed dictionary or thesaurus or online sources,
you may find that a word may have more than one meaning.
When you decide the meaning, you look for clues before and
after the sentence where the word is used. This will give you an
idea of the possible meaning.
