Lesson
Achieving the Writer’s
1 Purpose

Understanding the writer’s purpose is a skill. In order for you to identify the
reason why a literary piece is written or shown, you must master and recall the elements
of such literary piece. The elements of a literary piece will lead you to achieve the writer’s
purpose.

What’s In

Before we will identify the purpose of the writer, we must carefully understand
how the literary piece is written by looking into its structure and elements.

Notes to the Teacher

Let the students determine the elements of the materials

viewed and explain the author’s purpose.

8
What’s New

An author has a purpose for writing a text. Sometimes, a text is written to give
entertainment or to amuse the reader or viewer. At times, an author’s purpose is merely
to inform the reader about something. Other times, he or she is writing to provide an
argument on the hope of convincing the reader or viewer regarding a certain topic.

Now, let us closely watch Disney’s short film entitled “Paperman” using the given
YouTube link.

 Describe the characters in the short film.

 Where do you think the story happened?
 How does the events of the story unfold?
 What do you think is the purpose of the writer in writing the story?

9
What is It

What is a story? Merriam-Webster defined story as a fictional narrative shorter

than a novel and the intrigue or plot of a narrative or dramatic work. It consists of basic
elements which includes characters, plot, setting, conflict, point of view and theme
and along with tone and mood.
Characters are the people involved in the story. He or she can be a protagonist (the
main character) or an antagonist.
Setting refers to the description of where and when the story takes place.
Plot is the main sequence of events that make up the story. Its structure consist of the
beginning (exposition), the rising action, climax (the turning point), falling action and
resolution (denouement).
The point where the characters collide and struggle is the conflict. It is usually the
heart of the story.
How the story is being told is determined by its point of view.
The theme is the central idea revealed in the story.
Tone is the general feeling of a story or scene while mood reflects the emotion the author
wants the reader to feel.

Authors may have varied reasons in writing a text. There are three main reasons: to
entertain, to persuade and to inform.

Let us learn about each of these!

To entertain – writing texts to give readers enjoyment and amusement.

Stories, poems, and plays may teach a lesson but the author’s main purpose is to
entertain.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel amuse us through its characters, setting and plot.

To inform – writing texts to provide information.

Some directions, articles and reports may be entertaining but the author’s main purpose
is to inform.

To persuade – writing text to influence the reader

Be careful. A text that is written to persuade may also be entertaining or informative,

like a funny commercial.

was settling into a smooth and steady motion, with the waves at heel; the wind was
softening to a tuneful breeze; fluffy, radiantly white clouds were beginning to light up
in a vast fathomless dome of delicate pale blue. It was the dawn of a beautiful day in
the Pacific Ocean. My shirt was already beginning to dry. The night had vanished as
quickly as the ship.

I began to wait. My thoughts swung wildly. I was either fixed on practical details of
immediate survival or transfixed by pain, weeping silently, my mouth open and my
hands at my head.
