How I learnt Cooking during Lock-Down

With nothing much to do during the yearlong Lockdown, I was hard-pressed to look for avenues
to keep myself busy and contribute something worthwhile. At home the family is dependent on
good food and preparing or learning how to cook a new meal can be challenging as well as
exciting. So, learning how to cook seemed both practical as well as the right thing to do. Food
has always found a way to bring people together. Earlier it was by inviting people to dinner and
eating out, now it’s about sharing the comfort that food brings via social media. Acquiring a
new skill with my mom’s guidance just about gave me the encouragement to not depend on
fast-food but create something worthwhile which is healthy.

Our house has a microwave oven which makes it easy to bake and cook. To begin with I wanted
to learn how to bake bread and make chapati. My mom taught me the basics of kneading
dough and ensuring it is smooth. It is also important to know what to add to the flour so that it
rises. It started with my mom supervising the activity. I had to learn how to measure flour and
then add the right quantity of water. I also had other details such as how long to bake the flour.
Slowly I am able to bake bread. Most important basic is to understand and practice knife
cutting. I had to learn how to peel and then cut and slowly shred pieces of lettuce, potato and
other vegetables. Also, once these are cut, how to wash them properly is an art, which requires
patience. Once you learn the art of cutting properly, one needs to understand how to fry and
boil if required. Another critical factor is adding just the right amount of spice and salt, so that it
does not taste bland or too spicy. I learnt the hard way this comes only with experience. But it
helps to know how much approx. spice should be mixed in given quantity.

My experiment with cooking took place under my mother’s guidance since she has been serving
us nourishing food since birth. I was able to make variety of dishes like pizza, lasagne, dal,
chapati, focaccia Bread, Brownies, Waffles and Banana cake. Also, it’s important to be patient
and take criticism gracefully. The key is keep improving and try your best. It is so satisfying
when something that you cook actually turns out to be actually good and everyone in the family
praises you. Also, cooking your own food is not only healthy, but helps you save and protect
against stomach upset of outside food. And there is no doubt that it helps to build up
confidence. I am proud of having acquired a new and useful skill that helps me contribute.
