INTRODUCTION

Moving from being a teenager to becoming an adult is an essential time in a person’s life.
It comes with lots of challenges, unknowns, and chances for growth. In the last nine years, the
world of counseling has changed a lot to meet the needs of young adults in our ever-changing
world. As Arnett (2015) mentioned, this phase is often called “emerging adulthood.” It’s a time
where people explore, develop their identity, and try to be independent.

Recently, many studies and writings from experts like Schulenberg and Schoon (2018)
and Settersten (2019) have shown that we must pay special attention to young adults’ feelings,
thoughts, and social needs in today’s world. The counseling needs of young adults have garnered
increasing attention over the past decade, driven by evolving societal dynamics and the growing
recognition of the unique challenges faced by this demographic group. Young adults face many
changes and struggles while developing themselves and in connection with that, they seek
various needs from concerned persons like counselors. Counselors have a range of
responsibilities in their communities. In connection with the young adults’ counseling needs,
four (4) major needs were provided from related works of literature. These are the need for
mental health counseling, career guidance assistance, family related problems, and academic
assistance. According to a study conducted by Lassinantti in 2018, mental health issues of young
adults are becoming more relevant as the years go by. They face this type of issue because of
their various concerns in life. They are more prone to mental health issues such as anxiety.

According to recent research (Smith & Johnson, 2019), the counseling landscape for young
adults has evolved, and the demand for mental health services among this age group has notably
increased. Issues such as identity formation, academic pressures, career-related stress, and the
influence of technology have all contributed to a heightened need for tailored counseling
interventions.

Pescosolido et al. (2013) conducted research emphasizing the impact of societal

stigma on mental health help-seeking behaviors. Some young adults may avoid seeking

counseling due to the social stigma associated with mental health issues. Stigma can lead to fear

of judgment or discrimination, preventing individuals from openly discussing or addressing their

mental health concerns. However, Sareen et al. (2011) explored the importance of improving

On the other hand, substance abuse was the last assistance as a reason for seeking assistance

from counselors, 1 gathering responses which corresponds to 5%. This shows that young adults

have a high need for assistance concerning their mental health state and they have the least need

for substance abuse counseling.

Recent studies like Véronneau and Dishion (2010) have explored the impact of

academic difficulties on young adults' well-being. They claimed that academic stressors can

contribute to mental health challenges, making counseling a relevant support mechanism. This

suggests that the survey result aligns with existing research on the relationship between academic

stress and the need for counseling. Moreover, mental health challenges among young adults are a

well-documented concern as Twenge (2017) and Kessler et al. (2007) have discussed the rising

rates of mental health issues among this age group, emphasizing the importance of accessible

counseling services. The survey result aligns with the broader trend of increasing demand for

mental health support among young adults.

This finding affirms to the study of Steven (2017). This study delved into the

intricacies of young adults' perspectives on counseling, shedding light on the factors that

contribute to its perceived significance. The researchers conducted in-depth interviews and

qualitative analyses, uncovering nuanced insights into the psychological well-being of young

adults. Steven findings not only affirm our survey results but also provide valuable context.

Stevens identified common themes such as the increasing societal pressures, academic stressors,

and challenges in interpersonal relationships that contribute to the perceived need for counseling

among young adults. The author emphasized that recognizing and addressing these underlying

issues through counseling can play a pivotal role in promoting mental health and resilience in

this demographic. Furthermore, Steven underscored the importance of tailored counseling

approaches that consider the unique experiences and concerns of young adults.

Based on the data shown above, it highlights the perceptions of young adults regarding

counseling services. Out of the respondents, 14 or 70% “strongly agree” that the services

provided by counselors have been effective in helping address problems, while 1 or 5%

answered “neutral”. However, 5 or 25% responded with “disagree” stating that the services were

not effective in helping young adults with challenges or problems. In the study conducted by

Gonzales (2016), the researchers extensively explored how young adults perceive counseling

services. Their investigation involved gathering insights from a diverse group of participants.

What emerged from their survey was a clear consensus among respondents. A significant

number of young adults strongly agreed that counseling services were effective in addressing

challenges they faced. According to the results, it seems like young adults really like and benefit

from counseling. It tells us that counseling is seen as a valuable way to deal with problems. This

info adds more detail to our understanding of how counseling makes a positive impact on young

adults.

Based on the survey findings illustrated in Figure 7, 8 or 40% highlighted mental health

concerns as the most prevalent issue among young adults. Following closely, 6 or 30% of

respondents identified a need for career guidance, while 3 or 15% emphasized academic stress as

a prevalent concern for this demographic. Moreover, 2 or 10% indicated family-related problems

as a primary need. Additionally, 1 or 5% of the respondents answered for relationship problems.

Therefore, mental health concerns as a crucial aspect for young adults, whereas relationship

problems emerged as the least prevalent need among this demographic. In the study of Harrison

(2016) study about how young adults navigate the challenges of life, Harrison delved deep into

the emotional well-being of individuals in this age group. He wanted to understand the

prevalence of mental health concerns among young adults, seeking to uncover the factors that

impact their psychological well-being. Through careful analysis and thorough research methods,

Harrison discovered that a significant portion of young adults’ grapple with various mental

health issues. The researcher's findings resonated strongly with the results of our survey, which

also identified mental health concerns as a primary worry for 40% of respondents. However, a

study by Robert (2019) explores the importance of career guidance for young adults.

Recognizing that this transitional period can be fraught with uncertainties and decisions that

significantly impact one's future, the study aimed to explore the role of career guidance in easing

this transition. Robert demonstrated the pivotal role that career guidance plays in the holistic

development of young adults.

that counseling services remain relevant and effective for all individuals in this age group. In the

study by Patel (2019), the primary objective was to investigate the influence of counseling

services on the well-being and development of young adults. His research not only aligns with

but also strongly supports the results we obtained from our survey. Patel discovered that

counseling plays a pivotal role in fostering a significant positive impact on the psychological

well-being of young adults. The participants in the study experienced substantial personal

growth, and various facets of their lives were positively influenced as a result of engaging in

counseling services.

One key aspect highlighted in Patel research is the idea that counseling is more than

just a support service; it serves as a dynamic catalyst for positive change in the lives of young

adults. The study showcases that through active participation in counseling, individuals in this

age group can navigate challenges, overcome obstacles, and, most importantly, experience

growth on a personal level.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

Based on the results from the methods used to collect data for this study, the researchers

concluded that the number of young adults who do not seek help from a counselor is greater than

those who seek help from a counselor. And those who sought assistance provided by the social

workers/ counselors helped the respondents to overcome and provide for their needs.

The researchers also concluded that the respondents need mental health counseling, career

guidance assistance, family issues, relationship problems, academic stress and substance abuse.

Mental health counseling is the assistance that young adults seek the most while substance abuse

is their least needed assistance from counselors. We also concluded that counseling is so

important for young adults. Counseling have been effective and has positive impact on the lives

of young adults. According to young adults it would be in difficult situations if counselors

weren’t around. The significance of counselors is that they assist young adults’ sort through their

thoughts and feelings while also teaching them coping strategies for difficult situations.

Counselors also help improve young adults intellectually, economically, psychologically, and

personally, which is very crucial for the respondents.

Overall, the survey confirms the importance of counseling for young adults, particularly in

addressing mental health issues. While most respondents found counseling effective and

positively. These insights will help guide the enhancement of counseling services to better meet

the diverse needs of young adults during this crucial phase of their lives.

Recommendations

The researchers developed perceptions that could be given attention based on the

presentation and interpretation of the study’s outcomes and conclusions. This study has

contributed to taking the personal preferences of young adults ages 18 to 21 years old regarding

their counseling needs. As the study progressed, a few areas surfaced as suggested areas for

future studies. The recommendations are as follows:

The researchers recommend creating simple, easy-to-understand infographics or flyers with

appreciation or quotes to spread awareness to young adults that they are not alone, we have

counselors.

Additionally, we should leverage the power of online platforms to spread awareness. Craft

compelling, shareable posts and utilize relevant hashtags to reach a wider audience. Encourage

young adults to participate in the conversation and share their thoughts on counseling needs.

Furthermore, consider other innovative methods for knowledge dissemination, such as

short video summaries or interactive online platforms to educate students about how they can

seek help, where they can seek help, and whom they should seek help from.

Appendix A. Narrative

Counseling is a vital field that plays a crucial role in addressing the diverse needs of

individuals, families, and communities. Young adults, in particular, face a distinct set of

challenges as they embark on the journey from adolescence to adulthood.

Throughout our comprehensive survey, we had the opportunity to connect with

individuals who expressed a wide range of needs. This study provided valuable insights into the

specific requirements of young adults when it comes to counseling services. The results revealed

several key areas where counseling can make a significant impact on their lives.

Foremost among these needs is the demand for support in the realm of mental health. It is

evident that many young adults grapple with mental health issues, including anxiety and

depression. In this context, counselors can play a pivotal role in facilitating access to mental

health services and offering invaluable support and guidance as these young individuals navigate

the challenges posed by such conditions.

Another critical need highlighted by our survey is related to education and career

planning. Many young adults find themselves at a crossroads, unsure of the path they wish to

pursue. They often require expert guidance to explore diverse career options, make informed

decisions, and chart a course for their future.

In essence, counseling serves as a lifeline for young adults in their journey through the

complexities of adulthood, offering them a compass to navigate the tumultuous waters of life.

In closing, we strongly advocate for the encouragement of young adults to seek assistance

from professional counselors. These dedicated individuals are equipped with the knowledge and

expertise to provide unwavering support and guidance to those facing a wide spectrum of

personal, emotional, and social challenges. Together, we can work towards a brighter, more

resilient young adult population.
