Chantaisie

Victor Hugo said, “La musique, c’est du bruit qui pense”.


At Modern, French Singing has been a strong forte for many years. Chantaisie is
one of the events in the competition that will not only test the singing talent of the
contestants but will also recognize and appreciate the essence of the Francophone
spirit in the United Arab Emirates.

There will be two categories in this section of the competition.


JUNIOR CATEGORY: Ages 11-13
SENIOR CATEGORY: Ages 14-17

Rules and Regulations:


A. Choosing the song and the participant:

1. The songs chosen by the schools should only be in the French language and by
Francophone artists. Songs that were originally composed in any language
other than French or those that have been translated or dubbed into French
are not permissible. Furthermore, the chosen songs must maintain a standard
of lyrical decorum and should be devoid of any profanity. In the event that a
selected song is deemed inappropriate for the occasion, schools will be kindly
requested to select an alternative song.
2. The song will also be chosen on a first come first serve basis.
Participants will not be allowed to repeat songs.
3. The duration of the song chosen must not exceed 3 and a half minutes.
4. Teams must submit the name of the song and the performing artist(s), along
with the lyrics. [For example: Parce que c’est toi – Celine Dion]
5. The contest is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Only the first 10 schools
that register will be able to participate.
6. Only 1 singer per category from each school is permitted. Therefore, schools
must only send 2 participants each, 1 for Juniors and 1 for Seniors.
7. The tracks must be submitted by the 10th January, 2024.
B. During the competition:

1. All school teams must perform in their school uniform.


2. Please ensure that the team and the accompanying teacher are present during
the entire duration of the event.
3. Teams are expected to maintain a proper code of conduct.
4. As this is purely a singing competition, the music teacher of the participating
school is allowed to play the piano off-stage. If the school wishes the students
to play the instruments themselves, they must notify the host school while
registering which instruments they are to use. No instruments will be provided
by the host school.
5. The judges’ decisions will be final.

La Récitation
De la pOÉSIE
La récitation de la poésie is an enchanting group poetry recitation. A team of 4-6
students from each school will recite a poem of their choice, not exceeding 3
minutes. The poem could be works of French or Francophone authors. The age
group for this category is 14-17 years only.

Rules and Regulations:

1. Each team must perform a poem by a French or Francophone author.


2. The participant will need a slide with the poem and the translation in the
background during their performance. Slides should not contain any sound or
music.
3. Schools must submit the poem with the name of the poet, and the slide that
will be used by 10th January, 2024.
4. Reading is not permitted.
5. The final score for each team will be the aggregate of scores awarded by
each judge.
6. The decision of the judges will be final and irrevocable.

Dis-moi dix mots
"Dis-moi dix-mots" is a well-known painting competition that takes place in various
francophone countries as a national awareness campaign for the propaganda of
the French language.

There are two categories for the event:


JUNIOR CATEGORY: Grade 6 to 8 (11 -13 years old)
SENIOR CATEGORY: Grade 9 to 12 (14- 17 years old)

Rules and Regulations:

1. Artwork will be done over a period of the two days of the event.
2. The artist must base their work on one of the 10 words provided at the start of
the competition.
3. The artist may interpret the word as per their imagination. The use of phones
or any other device in any way will not be permitted.
4. The artist should be able to clearly demonstrate how the work relates to
the chosen word. After finishing the art piece, a small paragraph needs to be
written in French to describe the work.
5. Artwork may be 2D or 3D.
6. Materials must be brought by the team
7. One canvas of approximately A2 size will be provided at the venue to each
artist
8. If an artist wishes to get their own canvas, they are free to do so.
9. Mixed media is allowed (however no photography, paper cutouts, or stencils
are allowed).
10. Participants of Dis-moi Dix-Mots cannot participate in any other event
under La Fête De La Francophonie.

Festival Francofilm
The second edition of the Festival Francofilm 2024 is set to take center stage
as the highlight event at GEMS Modern Academy. For this year's festival, we
have a twist that will need to be incorporated into every film. Each school can
choose to use one new technology for their films, whether it be augmented
reality (AR), animation, or more. They will also be judged for their integration
of this unique new technology. The festival is full of rigour and passion, and we
can't wait to see the young actors on the silver screen.

Rules and Regulations:

1. The film should be 10-15 minutes long.


2. The director and producer must be present at the time of judging.
3. All dialogues should be in French.
4. The film must have English subtitles.
5. Use of English dialogues may lead to disqualification.
6. The film will be an adaptation of a famous French book/play. The team
can make minor changes in the characters of the book/play but the
essence of the story should not deviate from the original script.
7. This competition is only open to students from grades 9-12 (14-17
years of age).
8. Schools must submit the final film by 20th February, 2024

LA JOUTE Rhétorique
The culture of France and the Francophone countries is intertwined with their
emphasis on the democratic ideals of free speech and debate. La Joute
Rhétorique is a team debate, testing the prowess of the participants in
developing arguments and presenting them in a compelling manner. The age
group for this category is 14-17.

Rules and Regulations:

A. Format of the tournament:


Participants must be in teams of 3, with each participant having to
deliver one speech during each debate.
Each team will compete at least twice during the group stage, where
motions are released in advance.
Motions for the group stage will be released one week before the
competition. Sides will only be assigned to the team on the day of the
competition, and 10 minutes of preparation time will be given after the
draw of sides.
The top 4 teams of the group stage will qualify for an elimination bracket.
Motions and sides for the elimination rounds will be released before the
debate, with 30 minutes to prepare.
The total number of teams is limited to 16 and teams will be accepted on
a first-come first-serve basis.

B. Format for participants' speeches:


Each speech should be 4 minutes long, with 15 additional seconds of
grace time.
Points of Information(questions from the opposing team) can be asked
during the speech. These Points of Information can be accepted or
denied by the speaker.

Participants will be evaluated based on the WSDC speaker roles:


1. The first speaker must introduce the debate, define key terms, highlight
the team’s stance, and introduce arguments.
2. The second speaker must refute opposing claims, extend arguments
from the first speaker, and introduce arguments.
3. The third speaker must summarise the debate, respond to opposing
claims, and reinforce the case presented by the previous speakers. The
third speaker is not permitted to introduce new arguments and will be
marked down for doing so.

The first and last 30 seconds of the speech are considered Protected
Time, wherein Points of Information cannot be asked.
Failure to adhere to the time requirements will result in a negative
marking at the discretion of the judges.
Failure to ask or respond to Points of Information will also result in
negative markings. Participants are encouraged to both answer and
ask at least one Point of Information each.
All parts of the speeches must be presented with appropriate
language and grammar usage. The judge may choose to discount that
section of the speech if deemed in violation of these rules.

ALORS ON DANSE
Dance is an art where creativity knows no boundaries and the magic of
movement transcends language. With a variety of traditional French folk
dances, contemporary interpretations, and dynamic fusion routines the
performances will be a celebration of technique, artistry, and the boundless
possibilities of expression. This exhilarating event brings together talented
dancers from various backgrounds to showcase their skills, creativity, and
passion for the art of movement.

Theme:
Regional French Dances: Showcase the diversity of French dance culture by
including regional dances from different parts of France. Participants can
explore traditional dances by incorporating regional costumes and music. The
categories are as follows:

Danse Bretonne
Danse Alsacienne
Danse Provençale
La Bourrée
Danse Savoyarde
Danse Occitane

Rules and Regulations:

A. Song and Team:


1. Chosen backing tracks should be by French or francophone artists.
Participants are not permitted to select tracks in English or any other
language that have been dubbed into French, and their chosen tracks
must be devoid of any profane content.
2. Teams will submit the name of the song, and the performing artists
(Example: Parce que c ’ est toi – Celine Dion). Should the songs be found
unsuitable for the event, schools will be asked to choose another song.
3. The contest is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Only the first 10 schools
who register will qualify for participation.
4. The duration of the song should not exceed 4 minutes.
5. Only 1 team (of 8 students) is permitted from each school. The team must
consist of 4 students from the age category 11-14 years and 4 students from
the age category of 15-18 years.
7. All tracks to be given to the host school coordinators by Jan 10th, 2024.

B. During the competition:


1. It is the responsibility of the participating school to bring the needful
props if the choreography involves its use, no props will be provided by
the host school.
2. Kindly ensure that the team and the accompanying teacher are present
during the entire duration of the event.
3. Teams are expected to maintain a proper code of conduct.
4. The judges ’ decisions will be final.

À LA MODE
This competition provides participants with an opportunity to showcase their
understanding of French culture, history, and language through monologues
delivered as famous French personalities. Participants should choose a
historical French figure and deliver a monologue in the French language,
demonstrating their grasp of language fluency, historical knowledge, and
effective communication skills.

Rules and Regulations:


1. Participants must register by 20th November, 2023 for the
competition. Registration will include the participant’s name, chosen
historical figure, and a brief description of their monologue.
2. Participants must select a famous French historical figure (Napoleon
Bonaparte, Marie Curie, Victor Hugo, etc.)
3. Monologues should be original, written in French, and based on the
chosen figure’s life achievements and impact. They should be respectful
and sensitive to the historical figure’s legacy and cultural impact.
4. Monologues must be between 2 and 3 minutes in length.
5. Participants will deliver their monologues during a predetermined time
slot on the competition day. Monologues should be delivered with
passion, accuracy, and fluency.
6. Participants are encouraged to dress in attire that represents the
chosen historical figure.
7. Props and visual aids may be used but must not overshadow the
participant’s spoken performance.
8. The judges’ decisions are final and not subject to dispute. Scores from
each judge will be totaled to determine the final score.
9. In case of a tie, the participant with the highest score in the “Language
Proficiency and Expression” category will be ranked higher.
