RULES

1. PRELIMINARY

a. This event is being organized for all students in the First Year of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) at
Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow (“RMLNLU”).
b. It is being organized to accustom the ‘First years’ to the concept of Oral Rounds of
Moot Court Competitions.
c. The event is subject to the rules and regulations of the Moot Court Committee,
RMLNLU (“MCC”), which reserves all rights to change any rule/regulation.

2. REGISTRATION

a. All interested students may register themselves by filling out the Google form
https://forms.gle/LjdcCSaatboxzACo6 latest by 11.59 PM, 21st July 2023.

3. STRUCTURE OF THE ORAL ROUNDS

a. The use of any electronic gadgets during the Oral Rounds is strictly prohibited.
b. The time limit for the Oral Submissions in the rounds will be fifteen (15) minutes for
each participant, including the time for Rebuttals and Sur-rebuttals. Exceeding the limit
shall be penalized.
c. No speaker can speak for more than fifteen (15) minutes. No speaker will be allowed
more than five (5) minutes for Rebuttal or Sur-Rebuttal.
d. Time extensions may be given to each team at the discretion of the Judges. The Judges
shall endeavour to ensure that both teams get an opportunity to speak for the
same amount of time.
e. In the Oral Rounds, each participant shall have to argue twice, once as the Petitioner
and once as the Respondent.
f. The participants shall be paired on a random basis, as there will be no Memorial
Submission.
g. No two participants shall argue against each other more than once.

4. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR ORAL PLEADING SESSIONS

a. The Oral Pleading Sessions will be marked on a scale of 100 marks per participant as
per the following criteria:
i. Application of Law to Facts: 20 Marks
ii. Time Management and Organization: 20 Marks
iii. Knowledge of Law and Use of Authorities: 20 Marks

iv. Ingenuity, Ability to answer questions: 20 Marks
v. Style, Poise, Courtesy and Demeanor: 10 Marks
vi. Effective Rebuttals: 10 marks

5. DRESS CODE

a. The Dress Code for the participants during the rounds of the competition shall be as
prescribed for Advocates of the Supreme Court by the Bar Council of India Rules, 1975,
under Chapter IV (Rules under Sec 49 (1) (g) of the Advocates Act, 1961).

6. DISCLAIMER

a. The material in the Moot Court Problem is not intended to and does not attempt to
resemble any incident or any person living or dead. All material in the problem is
fictitious, and any resemblance to any incident or person, if any, is not intended but
merely coincidental.

7. RESULTS

a. The Judges shall inform the participants of their performance after the conclusion of
the rounds itself.

8. DISPUTE REDRESSAL BODY

a. MCC shall be the final arbiter for these Rules, and any such decision made by it on any
issue/dispute arising in relation to the competition shall be final and binding on all
concerned participants.

9. MISCELLANEOUS

a. Scouting is strictly prohibited and shall result in immediate disqualification.


b. MCC reserves the right to amend, alter, vary or change, in any manner whatsoever, the
rules governing the competition, which would be communicated to the participants
within a reasonable period of time.
