Prova A – Reading Comprehension

DAVID

David, a 14-year-old American boy, used to hate school. He hated it so much that most school days began with a battle
between David and his mother, because he simply refused to get up and go to school.
His parents were not even sure that David went to school when he left home, so sometimes his mother had to phone the
school mid-morning to ask if David was there. Sometimes she got a call from one of David’s teachers, saying that he had
not arrived and asking if he was ill.
David was not less brilliant than the other pupils; he simply didn’t like sitting at desk, reading, writing and listening to
‘boring’ teachers. His parents were really desperate. They were also surprised because David’s teachers continued to pass
him. “I know why”, David’s father said, “they don’t want to have you in their class for another year. They are fed up with
you”. But the day came when David’s parents were called to school by the headmaster. “He can no longer play this
game”, he said, “his results aren’t satisfactory at all. He must repeat the year”.
David, who was in the seventh grade, was shocked. He wanted to leave school for ever. “I don’t mind if you don’t go to
university”, said his father, “but you must finish high school, even if you have to stay there till you’re thirty!”.
On the first day of the new school year he said to his mother: “You’re sending me to prison, remember!”. When he came
home, however, he didn’t seem so miserable; he even accepted to talk about the day over dinner. “There are two
computers at school this year and our new teacher, Mr. Glemp, promised to show them to us”. In a few weeks David
learnt to manipulate numbers, letters and whole words on the screen. He also asked Mr. Glemp if he could stay extra
hours at school, to use the computer. The teacher agreed on condition that his results in the other subjects were
satisfactory. David goes to school regularly now. He always arrives on time and sometimes stays longer in the afternoon.
He wants to go to university and specialise in computer studies.
