THE SPIRITUAL ART OF BUSINESS
REFERENCE

Barry L. Rowan. (2023). The Spiritual Art of Business: Connecting the Daily with the Divine.
IVP.
PART 1-
BETTER EMPLOYEE- According to me an employee’s duty is to perform his tasks in order to

achieve organizational goals. One should prioritize the organisational target over his/her personal

goal and should work for the welfare of the company. Being a better employee is all about

showing up to work without a motive of self interest and working together as a single unit rather

than becoming selfish and solely thinking about fulfilling personal objectives.

BETTER MANAGER- Becoming a manager involves skills like leading, directing, organising

which could be harsh if not performed in accordance with human rights, keeping in mind that the

individual we are dealing with is a human like us. It should be the integration of individual

employee’s effort to achieve the common goal in a compassionate and empathetic manner, As

leading without compassion can turn into dictatorship,

IMPORTANCE- It is important to adopt such environment in a business unit as it has an ability

to transform the work environment in a positive way and make it a place where words like unity,

trust, respect, empathy and selflessness reside. As employees who work in such environment

tend to be cohesive and cooperative in nature which leads to the achievement of the goals in an

easier way.

PART 2- According to me friendship is an important aspect of workplace environment because it

can help us to do our jobs in a better way and can also help us to grow as a person overall. It is a

good idea to maintain friendship at work, but it is also necessary to know your boundaries when

you are on job because after all it is your professional life. Friendship plays an important role in
my life because it has helped me to become a better person throughout my life, but it depends on

what kind of friends you hang out with. At work having a good connection with your co-workers

can make your tasks easier and makes the environment cohesive. I think it is not bad to have

your work and personal life together if you know the boundaries and the main thing is to

maintain the balance between those two and not letting them interfere with each other.

PART 3- a) Viewing everything under the lordship of Christ involves doing daily work in order

to praise God. To achieve this one must do his tasks with compassion, helping others, sense of

empathy and integrity. Understanding the importance of working under Christ’s lordship opens

up the possibility of finding purpose not only in your job but in life. “All I would do, I would do

for God” (Rowan, 2023). Doing what makes God happy is the only way to bring glory to God

and that is by finding harmony between professional and spiritual life and finding ways on how

we can serve God rather than running to achieve materialistic things. We can provide glory to

God by doing good deeds without any motive of self interest and helping the needy ones and

making a positive impact on society. Daily tasks which are impactful in a positive way will bring

glory to God like showing empathetic approach towards employees and being compassionate to

them, this will help the company to achieve goals easily as well as will bring to glory to God as it

is a humanitarian act.

b)- The connection between the daily activities and the divine can be established through act of

kindness. The activities done with an intention of helping others or giving them benefit through

that can be a good way to connect tasks with divine. Every moment can be turned into the act of
gratitude and kindness by integrating values like compassion, empathy, love, due to which the

tasks become acts of worship and you are spiritually connected to divine. This act of conversion

transforms boring tasks into positive contributions to the society as well as establishes a

continuous thread between daily job and spirituality. The recognition of the divine in every task

makes the task a spiritual journey which is not about reaching the destination but infusing an act

of humanity at every step.

PART 4- a) I am international student, and my current financial situation is not at its best as

alone I must manage my tuition fees, rent, commuting charges, food and all my needs. I don’t

feel a sense of freedom around money I own because it is not enough to fulfill my needs and I

can say that I am enslaved by it because our society runs on money. People consider money as a

supreme power without which one cannot do anything, I agree to some extent but running in a rat

race to earn money just to obtain the materialistic things is not justified, we were sent on earth

with a purpose to fulfill not to chase the worldly pleasures. We must do the tasks which will

bring glory to God and set an inspiration for the society. Financial freedom comes your way only

when you fulfill your needs not wants because wants keeps on increasing as you fulfill them.

b) The wealth and possessions I have are all blessings from God and viewing these blessings

from stewards point of view will change your overall perspective in a positive way because the

money you earn on earth remains on earth and you cannot take it to afterlife which testifies that
nothing compares with the greatness of God. This perspective leads humans to develop a sense

of responsibility towards managing the God gifted resources in integration with human ethics

and values. Doing acts of kindness creates a positive impact on society and doing such acts of

philanthropy without a motive of self interest will surely bring glory to God. All the wealth given

to us by God is a gift that comes with a responsibility to help the unfortunate people without

expecting anything in return and the real wealth is the sense of happiness and achievement

earned by helping the needy ones. “A gift that comes with a responsibility and a recognition that

none of it is ours, all of it is God’s, and we are but stewards of the wealth and possessions that

come our way” (Rowan, 2023).
