 The main idea is what the passage is all about. It is the reason
that something is written. It can often be found at the very
beginning of a written work. Supporting details add more
detailed information about the main idea. These make the
main idea more believable.

Let’s take a closer

look at main ideas and Giraffes are
supporting details. Read
the information below. extraordinary animals!

Giraffes are
extraordinary animals! Did you
know that giraffes are the tallest
mammals in the world? They can
grow to be up to fifteen to
eighteen feet in height! Male
giraffes are taller than female
giraffes. This amazing animal
primarily lives in the sub-Saharan
region of Africa. They can run as
fast as 35 miles per hour over short
distances. They love to eat the
leaves off of tall Acacia trees. The
leaves from these trees provide
them with water, so they only
need to drink water once
every few days.

“Amelia Earhart”

At ten years of age, a little girl by the name of Amelia èDate and place of birth and death
Earhart saw her very first airplane at a state fair. Little did
she know, her life would be defined by this incredible
machine. It wasn’t until she was ten years old at a stunt- èFamily information
flying exhibition that young Amelia would show a true
interest in aviation.
Amelia was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas in èLifetime accomplishments
the home of her grandfather. She graduated from a girl’s
finishing school in 1915, worked as a nurse’s aide in a
military hospital during World War II, went to college, and èMajor events of their life
eventually became a social worker. She took her first flying
lesson on January 3, 1921. After saving a little money for six
months, she was able to purchase her very first plane. It
èEffects/impact on society and if

first women’s record of flying to an altitude of 14,000 feet!
