REQUIREMENTS
The engineer in charge is responsible for all aspects of the engine ground run both
inside and outside of the aircraft. The most important consideration for the engineer in
charge is the safety of his crew and aircraft.
Certain engine tests performed require “High Power” thrust application. Any movement
of the thrust levers from the idle stops shall be defined as “High Power”.
For any given abnormal or emergency condition, the first action of the engineer in
charge is to move the thrust levers to idle. This will place the aircraft in a lower and
safer energy state for continued actions if necessary.
During high power thrust application, the engineer in charge should maintain his hand
on the thrust lever(s) until power is returned back to idle. Also, during engine start the
engineer in charge should maintain his hand on the start lever until the engine has
attained stabilized idle.
Checklist items are to be read by the person in the right hand seat. Each item is to be
read along with the corresponding action. Verbal confirmation of each item is required
from the man in the left-hand seat before proceeding with the checklist.
This document does not contain any detailed powerplant tests. Detailed test
requirements must be determined from the AMM ENGINE TEST TABLE then
extracted from the Maintenance Manual. The required tests should be printed from the
MM and taken to the aircraft with this handbook.

REQUIREMENTS CATHAY PACIFIC A333 ENG RUNNING GUIDE
A330-300
TS1990/ATTM/cl/REV 1 (30 AUG 19)]
ENGINE OPERATION/HANDLING
Make all thrust lever movements slowly (30 SEC minimum over full travel unless
engine tests specify otherwise).
NOTE: The above are aimed at preserving engine life and performance.
AIRCRAFT POSITIONING
For operation above mid thrust range aircraft must be facing into wind. (see
“DIAGRAMS”)
Avoid high power operation on a slippery surface; aircraft may slide. The pavement
must not be broken or loose, and it must be concrete, because asphalt can cause
damage to the aircraft.
If a blast fence is used ensure there is 200 FT minimum distance between the fence
and the engine nozzle. If less than 200 FT engine operation may not be stable.
Ensure ground is clear of loose objects including loose or cracked tarmac, concrete
etc in the area 40 FT (12 M) each side of the engine centerline and 60 FT (18 M)
forward from the rear of the engine.
Place run up chocks in front of wheel positions 1, 2, 3 & 4 and to the rear of wheel
positions 5, 6, 7 & 8.
WARNING:
SMALL WOODEN CHOCKS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR ENGINE HIGH POWER
RUN. LARGE HEAVY RUBBER CHOCKS MUST BE USED ON ALL MLG
POSITIONS.
Engine run location is to be in a clear area with no obstacle nearer than 50 meters in
front of the aircraft.
PERSONNEL
Ensure outside crew are aware of danger areas and method of approaching an idling
engine if required (see “DIAGRAMS”). No personnel shall approach an engine
operating above idle power.
Minimum flight deck personnel requirements are - one engineer with A330/TRENT
700 engine run approval issued by Cathay Pacific or by a contracted maintenance
organization and one technically competent observer/assistant e.g. a mechanic or
engineer familiar with handling the A330 but not holding engine run approval.
Minimum ground crew requirements are - Two mechanics familiar with the A330. One
to be in headset communication with the flight deck during starting and leak checks,
low power running and one to man the fire extinguisher and monitor the engines and
run up area during the engine run.
The ground crew should position themselves to a safe area in sight of the flight deck
for high power operations.
WARNING:
If there is no access step or airbridge positioned at an entry door during the run a
means of evacuation must be considered in the event of an emergency (uncontrollable
fire etc.) If a door slide is used evacuate on the side opposite the fire.
Ensure all doors are closed and remain closed during the engine ground run
regardless of the power level or duration.
Make sure that there is the correct quantity of fuel in the fuel tanks to run the engine.
The fuel quantity in each inner tank will not be less than 4000 kg (8818.49 lb) at
engine shutdown.

TEST REQUIREMENTS
When it is necessary to do a number of tests, make sure they are done concurrently to
prevent unnecessary engine running.
NOTE: The engine test table gives the minimum tests necessary however tests can
be extended as the operator thinks necessary.
The tests are written as isolated tests. If you do more than one test as a sequence of
tests, then the engine stop and start procedures (between each test) are not always
necessary.
When an engine run requires any recording of engine parameter, perform ACMS
manual engine report snapshot by pressing the remote print button on the pedestal.

EPR LIMIT
The maximum time for static engine operation at more than 1.54 EPR is 30 SEC.
If an engine test requires a power setting greater than 1.464 EPR, you must provide
balance thrust by operating the opposite engine to 1.284 EPR.
STARTER LIMITATIONS

VIBRATION GUIDELINES
Troubleshooting of engines that have LP (N1) vibration of more than 1 unit during
ground running is recommended to prevent too much vibration in service.
COWLINGS
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE FAN COWL PANELS ARE CLOSED
BEFORE YOU OPERATE THE ENGINE ABOVE IDLE POWER.
ENGINE ANTI-ICE
You must use the engine anti-ice if the conditions specified in below occur.
· TAT is below 10°C and moisture (fog, rain, snow, sleet or hail) is seen; use the
engine anti-ice.
· If it is necessary to use the engine anti-ice system; set the applicable ENGINE
ANTI-ICE to ON immediately after the engine gets to minimum idle.
NOTE: Do not do the performance test procedures when the applicable ENGINE
ANTI-ICE switch on the overhead panel is ON.
Do these steps if you must do the performance test when conditions make the use of
the anti-ice system necessary.
· Make sure that there is no ice on the air intake cowl before you set the anti-ice
switch to OFF.
· When you must make a record of the engine indications, set the anti-ice switch
to OFF for a maximum of 60 SEC.
· Immediately after you make a record of the engine indications, set the anti-ice
switch to ON.
· Make sure that there is no ice on the air intake cowl before you set the anti-ice
system to OFF again.

If you operate the engine in freezing fog for longer than a combined total of 45 MIN
(including Taxi in time), then perform the following core inlet de-icing procedure:
NOTE: Freezing Fog is visibility lower than 1,000 M and an OAT < 1°C
· If 1°C > OAT > -7°C, increase engine speed to 50% N1 for 60 SEC.
· If -7°C > OAT > -20°C, increase engine speed to 70% N1 for 50 SEC.
· If you cannot do the procedures above (or the engine has operated for longer
than the 45-minute limit), stop the engine and examine the VIGV for ice . If
necessary, manually de-ice the engine core inlet.
· Note in the maintenance log that this core inlet de-icing procedure has been
accomplished.
· Calculate the remaining time available to the flight crew for departure in freezing
fog conditions.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
PROCEDURE USE
The starting procedures written in this section are formatted in the style of a checklist.
However, the procedure is not to be read during the actual engine start but should be
referenced prior to the actual engine start.
GENERAL
OIL TEMPERATURE must be above -40°C before any attempt to start or motor the
engine.
The engine must be DRY MOTORED to reduce residual EGT to below 100°C.
The Alternate and Parking brake systems use Blue hydraulic power whilst Green
hydraulic power supplies the Normal brakes. It also supplies the landing gear steering
system.
For these above reasons both hydraulic systems must be pressurized during ground
running operations.
Normal AUTOSTARTS are the preferred method of starting engines for ground
running.
At any time the engine is run above idle a cooling period of 5 MIN is required prior to
shutdown.
If high power run up is required ensure that the flaps are fully retracted.
