ASSIGNMENT 1: DISCUSSION FORUM


A picture usually appeals to the eye. However, when you look at it deeply, it tells a
different story. Look at the pictures in the sections we dealt with and the readings
you were requested to do, and then do the following:

1.1 Examine the pictures and make notes on the different roles being played by the
teachers.

1.2 Reflect on the readings you made and in your own words respond to the
following questions:

• What is your understanding of what it means to be a “professional teacher”?

• What makes a professional teacher?

• What do you need to do to become a professional teacher?

NB: Respond to the above questions in 3 stages:


1. Your understanding of a professional teacher: Contribution and your response to
the discussion – 150 words
2. What makes a professional teacher? Contribution and your response to the
discussion – 150 words?
3. Your needs to become a professional teacher: Contribution and your response to
the discussion – 150 words

ASSIGNMENT 2: CASE STUDY

1. Find an example of a problem reported in a teacher magazine or any newspaper. Cut and
paste it in your assignment. It is important to indicate who wrote the article and where or in
which newspaper, magazine or article it was obtained. It means you need to acknowledge
the reporter or author of the article: for example:

A book: Author. (Date). Title. Place: Publisher.

3. Explain the steps you will take to deal with the problem

NB: This assignment requires the following:

a) A mind map
b) An example of reported issue experienced by teacher/s in the classroom (Cut and
Paste and Reference as well)
c) The summary of the issue in your words
d) Steps to be taken to the solution to the problem.

YOUR COMPLETE ASSIGNMENT SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 3 PAGES

ASSIGNMENT 3: INTERVIEW AND REPORT WRITING

Find an experienced teacher in the area in which you live and interview them about
their profession. In this interview, you will be trying to learn more about their
profession and the work they do. This includes the type of learners they teach as
well as their philosophy of teaching and learning. You will also want to understand
how helpful the body of the teaching profession in which they belong is.

You will be required to do the following:

1. Design at least six (6) guiding questions to help you in your conversation with the
identified teacher

2. Identify a teacher in any school of your choice

3. Schedule an appointment with the identified teacher

4. Explain the purpose of your interview

5. Do the interview

On completion of your interview, write a report on what you learnt from the teacher.
Your report must include the following:

 Factors that impact on teaching and learning

 Your understanding of the professional learning community

 The value of belonging to the community of teaching and learning

 The philosophy the teacher employs to facilitate learning better and also

accommodate all learners in the classroom

 From your interview experience, what would be your philosophy of teaching

and learning to benefit all learners in the class you will be teaching?

Your interview report should not be more than two and a half (2½) pages.

ASSIGNMENT 4: CASE STUDY


You are a new teacher in a multicultural and multilingual school. English is a second
or even a third language to the learners you have in your class. The majority do not
understand a single word of English but each group is highly conversant in their
respective home language, Isizulu, Setswana, Xitsonga, Afrikaans, Swahili, Urdu
and IsiNdebele. You have planned an English reading lesson but the majority of your
learners do not understand English.

 What would you do to make sure that your learners participate in a reading
lesson you have planned?
 How are you going to make sure they understand the lesson?
 Write down all the steps you plan to follow to make sure the lesson is a
success.

Your explanations with examples should not be more than 2 pages.

ASSIGNMENT 5: POWERPOINT PRESENTATION

The responses to your activities you posted in your blog will help you in responding
to this assignment. Your PowerPoint presentation should not be more than 10 slides.
This presentation requires you to research, and do not forget to include your
references. Provide examples to strengthen your presentation.

Design a PowerPoint presentation and respond to the following question:

How would you provide equal educational opportunities for learners from diverse
backgrounds in your classroom? This includes learners from:

 low-income background
 different ethnic or cultural background
 linguistic challenged backgrounds
 high ability learners and/or hyperactive learners
 Learners with diverse talents
 Learners with disabilities and learning disabilities.

ASSIGNMENT 6: CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION

There are a multiplicity of technology tools that can be used to enhance teaching and
learning. You want to teach your diverse learners to sing and enjoy school. But the
song must be meaningful and thought-provoking to your learners. You therefore
need to do the following:

 Compose a poem/song appropriate for the learners you plan to teach (Any
Grade)
 The poem/song can be written in any language but translated in English
 Your song must have an appropriate message for learners to enjoy it

 Record the poem/song and publish it on U-Tube


 Create a link where to find it and listen to the poem/song
 The poem/song should be 5 minutes long.
