Creative Writing (Non Fiction) GRADE 12
MODULE 4.2 (4TH QTR.) SECOND SEMESTER

Objectives: The students should be able to:

1. give the definition of abstract
2. differentiate between descriptive abstract and informative abstract; and
3. write an abstract of a given topic.

Writing an Abstract
An abstract is a short description, or a summary of the content of a paper
or piece of writing. This is an important part of a research paper because similar
to the table of contents of a book, this is the part that readers read first to know
if the paper is interesting enough, or worth spending their time.
There are two types of abstracts: the descriptive and informational
abstracts. The descriptive abstract tells about what topics are discussed in the
paper and little or nothing about what is said about each topic. This is easier to
write than the other type. Study the example below, which was based on the
outline about “body piercing” presented in the previous lesson.

DESCRIPTIVE ABSTRACT

Body piercing is considered by many people as an art. Likened to body

tattooing, it is an expression of how a person feels about himself, how he feels
about other people, or how he feels about his life in general. But like body
tattooing, it also presents danger to people subjecting themselves to have it.
Proper measures of avoiding these dangers are discussed.

The informational abstract, on the other hand, talks about what is said
about the topics. This type is longer than the descriptive abstract because it
provides more information than the latter. Study this example:

INFORMATIONAL ABSTRACT

Body piercing is considered by many people as an art. It is compared to

body tattooing because people consent to have a part of their body pierced as an
expression of how they feel towards themselves, towards others, and towards life
in general. Just like tattooing, there are health hazards brought about by body
piercing and the best way to prevent these is making sure that the needles are
new and disposable, the place is sanitary, and that the artist is a professional in
craft.
There may only be two types of abstracts, but it does not mean that you
cannot use a combination of both. Whatever it is that you choose to use, make
sure that you do not exceed one page. If this cannot be avoided and you will be
needing a longer abstract, make it as short as you can.
