Writing an Abstract
An abstract is a short description, or a summary of the content of a paper
or piece of writing. This is an important part of a research paper because similar
to the table of contents of a book, this is the part that readers read first to know
if the paper is interesting enough, or worth spending their time.
There are two types of abstracts: the descriptive and informational
abstracts. The descriptive abstract tells about what topics are discussed in the
paper and little or nothing about what is said about each topic. This is easier to
write than the other type. Study the example below, which was based on the
outline about “body piercing” presented in the previous lesson.
DESCRIPTIVE ABSTRACT
The informational abstract, on the other hand, talks about what is said
about the topics. This type is longer than the descriptive abstract because it
provides more information than the latter. Study this example:
