Shear Type Connections: Example

 A double angle shape,
2L6x6x5/8, is connected to a
5/8 gusset plate. Determine
the max total service load
that can be applied if the
ratio of D.L to L.L is 8.5.
 The bolts are 7/8” dia A325 type
bolts.
 The angle is A572 Grade 50 (fu
= 65ksi) steel.
 The gusset plate is A36 (fu =58
ksi) steel.

Shear Type Connections: Design Example

 A plate is used as a tension
member to resist a service DL
of 12 kips and LL of 33 kips. 3/8” x 6”
 This member is to be connected
using high strength bolts.
 A36 (Fu = 58 ksi) steel is used
in both tension member and
gusset plate.
 Determine the number of
bolts along with the
required layout for the given
loading.

Shear Type Connections: Design Example

Solution
 Calculate factored load 3/8” x 6”
 Pu = 1.2D + 1.6L
 Pu = 1.2(12) + 1.6(33)
 Pu = 67.2 kips

 Assume bolt size

 Sizes vary between ½ in to 1 ½ in
diameter with 1/8 in increments.
 Assume ¾ in dia bolts initially

Shear Type Connections: Design Example

 Pu = 67.2 kips, Bolt dia = ¾ in

 Compute shear strength

 ϕRn = 0.75 Fnv Ab
 ϕRn = 19.88 kips per bolt
 select num of bolts using this capacity

 Calculate number of bolts

 Num of bolts = Pu / (ϕRn per bolt)
 Num of bolts = 3.38 or approx 4

CE421 6
Adnan Rais 5/28/2022

Shear Type Connections: Design Example

 Pu = 67.2 kips, Num of Bolts
= 4 - ¾” A325 bolts,

 Estimate edge distance and

spacing
 S = 2 2/3 d or 3d
 S = 2.25 in (Approx 3 in c/c)
 Le = value from AISC Table J3.4
 Le = 1 1/4 inches (Approx 1.5 in)

Shear Type Connections: Design Example

 Pu = 67.2 kips, Num of Bolts = 4 -
¾” A325 bolts, PL 3/8” x 6”

 Develop Layout
 s = 3 in c/c
 Le = 1.5 in

 Check for Bearing

 Edge
 Lc = 1.094 in
 Between Fasteners
 Lc = 2.188 in

Shear Type Connections: Bearing Strength

 Calculate Bearing Strength
PL 3/8” x 6”
 Edge length (Lc = 1.094 in)
 Rn = 1.2 Lc t Fu
 Rn = 28.55 kips
 Between bolts (Lc = 2.188 in)
 Rn = 57.11 kips
 Upper Limit (dia = 3/4 in)
 Rn = 2.4 d t Fu
 Rn = 39.15 kips

CE421 9
Adnan Rais 5/28/2022

Shear Type Connections: Bearing Strength

 Total Bearing Strength
PL 3/8” x 6”
 Rn = 2(28.55) + 2(39.15)
 Rn = 135.4 kips
 ϕRn = 101.55 kips ( > 67.2 kips)

 There connection is safe in

bearing and the strength is
governed by bolt shear.
