breakdown
another term for misunderstanding,
miscommunication, or in other words,
something gets in the way in the
communication process that makes the
transaction unsuccessful.
According to Don Morlan and George Tuttle,
“communication breakdown is a failure of the
human communication system.”
Four Categories of
Communication Barriers
1. Physical Barriers
usually easy to spot.
these are the natural or environmental conditions that act as
barriers in communication whenever we are sending our
messages.
include distracting sounds and noise.
2. Psychological Barriers –
these are mental barriers that refer to the social and personal
issues of a speaker towards communicating with others.
refers to psychological state examples are opinions, attitudes,
emotion, consciousness that deeply affects the ability to
communicate.

3. Cultural Barriers
these are communication problems encountered by people due to
their own personal values, beliefs, and traditions which are in conflict
with others.
result of cultural diversity where the language, signs and symbols of
people of different cultures are different.
4. Linguistic Barriers –
words and delivery of statements may have different meanings,
especially in different places or contexts. These may cause confusion
and misunderstanding among communicators.
