essential when loading or unloading the MEWP or

during set-up. Wear hi-vis PPE when positioning
cones/signs. Ensure vehicles are conspicuous (e.g. use
flashing beacons/rear chevrons). Ensure loading and
working areas are well lit.
 Manage traffic – Obtain permission to implement
traffic management, such as temporary traffic lights, or
to close roads. Use signs and cones for maximum
warning to oncoming vehicles.
 Implement an exclusion zone – Segregate the working
area of the MEWP from vehicles. Position the MEWP
so that it does not overhang into traffic, including
configurations when slewed and when elevated. Take
into account the height and size of trucks and buses
that may pass by. Restrict access to pedestrians so that
they cannot walk under the platform.
 Load and unload safely – Do so in a well-lit area, away
from traffic or obstructions. Ensure enough space for
the loading vehicle to stop safely and for the MEWP to
man oeuvre safely. When unloading alongside the road
make sure that it is segregated from traffic.

 Make sure the work platform is fitted with effective

guard rails and toe boards.
 An exclusion zone beneath and around the working at
height area will be in place to prevent unauthorized
access.
 Do not overload the work platform. Operating capacity
should be clearly marked on the platform (if not ask).
 Ensure working platform is on secure, stable ground
capable of carrying the equipment. Ensure adequate
feet/base plates are correctly fitted, positioned and
adjusted.
 All access platforms, equipment must be inspected
daily with a written report (PUWER) completed
weekly unless equipment is found to be faulty, in need
of service or repair then it should be removed from
service immediately and reported to site supervisor,
and alternative arrangements made.
 A second trained operator will be available in the event
of an emergency to lower MEWP to ground using
auxiliary controls.
 Prior to the operation / use of a MEWP it must
be visually checked by a holder of the IPAF
license who will also check that it has been fully
