HOW
TO GET
MORE
CLIENTS
101 weird, random and practical ways
to find your next copywriting client.
Here are 101 ways to find your next client as soon as TODAY 👏
Some are totally random…
Each idea on this list is categorized into one of my 4 proven methods for
finding clients – Hunt, Gather, Play & Slay.
You might find success with all 4 methods OR you might find that one
works better for you based on your personality type!
So keep your eyes open and plant seeds often. I hope this list shows you
just how accessible, easy and FUN finding clients can be.
Ask yourself what brands do you admire? What products do you love?
Follow them on social media, get on their email lists and watch what they
are doing.
You can try actively sending these businesses brief but personal outreach
emails/DMs, frequently searching their career pages and closely
monitoring their email/social so you’re ready when open jobs pop up.
2. Make a list of the top 50 brands you’d love to work with, then sign up for
all of their email lists.
Keep an eye out for “we’re hiring” emails.
3. Follow all of the brands in your top 50 list on social media and engage
with their content frequently so they get familiar with seeing your name.
If you ever see an opportunity to offer real value or relevant
tips/suggestions, DM them.
8. Do pro bono work for a charity or non-profit you love to build your
authority, experience and referral network.
10. Rewrite the sales/landing page of a brand you love and send it to them.
11. Check your local newspaper or job board for job postings online.
12. Google search “[your city] hiring copywriter” (businesses who are hiring
often run advertisements or post about it on social media).
13. Find a magazine specific to your niche and look at the businesses that
are running ads in it.
Send them a personalized pitch.
14. Google search service-based businesses in your area, study how they
advertise and send them a personalized pitch (plumbers, electricians,
professional painters, appliance repairmen, auto-mechanics, house
cleaners, lawn care providers, etc.)
15. Google search alternative health + wellness providers in your area, study
their websites and reach out with a personalized pitch (massage
therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, etc.)
16. Collect the local flyers, pamphlets & mailers you get delivered to your
house.
These businesses are already spending money on advertising! Offer to
help them optimize their messaging.
20. Indeed
21. Monster
30. Upwork
32. Guru
This method is focused on building your network, and it starts with telling
everyone you know, meet and cross paths with about what you do and
WHY – friends, family, colleagues, current and previous bosses, anyone you
pay for services and yes – even complete strangers…
34. Contact every friend you know who runs a business to let them know
what you’re doing now and that you’re open to referrals.
35. Attend local business events in your area — even if they aren’t
copywriting or marketing-related! Remember, your skills & services can
help ANY business owner.
40. Host a meetup in your area to network & meet local business owners
(you could even make this a regular thing!)
42. Connect with other freelancers near you and see if they have clients
who need copy support (graphic designers, developers, video editors, etc.)
43. Work from a local cafe and chat with others who are doing the same.
Fun fact: I once met a client this way!
44. Attend “happy hour” events for local professionals. Ask what they do for
a living and share about what you do / how you can help.
45. Chat with your gym owner and/or personal trainer. Tell them about
what you do and see if they need any help with marketing and/or
branding.
46. Have a hobby that involves an instructor? Next time you’re there, tell
them what you do and offer to help with advertising (archery lessons,
dancing lessons, music lessons, pottery class, art class, cooking class, etc.)
47. Ask your personal service providers how they get new customers. Offer
to help them build an online presence (hair stylists, nail technicians,
eyebrow/lash technicians, facialists, makeup artists, wax technicians,
dentists, realtors, etc.)
48. Go to all of your favorite local businesses and talk to them about your
services. It’s a BONUS if you’re already a “regular” customer (cafes,
restaurants, plant shops, yoga studios, etc.)
49. Even eavesdropping (when done tactically, of course!) can land you a
new client…
Posse Story: “The word blog from a nearby table interrupted my convo
with a friend at a cafe. I stopped, looked at them, and said: ‘Sorry, I’m a
copywriter, so the word ‘blog’ is a trigger for me.’ Everyone laughed,
and we started a conversation…”
50. Join a paid copywriting program that allows for referrals and
networking opportunities.
This method is perfect for all my ambiverts who LOVE connecting with
people but prefer to do it from the comfort of home. You’re creative
and expressive and love to use social media to have conversations,
stay up-to-date on hot trends and share ideas.
This method is focused on using social media to connect with ideal clients,
post relevant content, showcase your skills and have fun and engaging
conversations! Remember – finding clients doesn’t have to be so serious!
52. Use the search function in Facebook groups to find conversations you
can contribute to.
“copywriter”, “copywriting”, “[YOUR NICHE]”, etc.
Easy does it! Don’t overwhelm yourself, select 1-2 platforms you can
commit to checking regularly.
62. Create a post that simply says, “I’m accepting X new clients this month.“
63. Share free tips and resources that showcase your expertise.
64. Post on your Instagram stories daily to showcase more personal, day-
to-day content.
66. Post “day in the life” of content (people love seeing behind-the-scenes!)
70. Post polls to see how you can better help your audience.
71. Partner with a freelancer in your niche and do a takeover of each other’s
account.
73. Frequently engage with people and businesses in your niche (leave
comments, share their posts, slide into their DMs – without pitching
anything!)
75. Post in Facebook group(s) offering a free strategy session (if allowed).
76. Post in Facebook group(s) asking what they need help with (if allowed).
77. Go LIVE and give free value & offer a copywriting audit at the end.
i.e. critique some copy you found online, talk about your services, point
out a mistake you’re seeing a lot of, etc. Remember to repost the
recording to your feed later!
80. Write an “Ask The Expert” column for your local newspaper.
85. Send out case studies and feature client wins to your email list.
86. Create a relevant and valuable lead magnet that helps your ideal client
solve a common problem (cheat sheets, checklists, helpful resources, etc.)
87. Host a workshop to help your clients solve a common problem and
upsell a strategy session.
89. Medium
90. Vocal.Media
91. Newsbreak
92. Substack
This method is perfect for any copywriter who prefers quality over
quantity. You’d rather work with fewer clients for longer than serve a
variety of clients at the same time. Once you get your foot in the door,
you focus on over-delivering results and gaining trusted referrals.
This method starts with getting a few quality clients who will recommend
you to others.
While it can take time to find these “super connector clients,” by staying in
your lane, showing up and doing great work, you can build your referral
network without ever needing to create a website, post on social media or
send a cold email.
94. Send a “thank you” card to your clients after you complete a project
and let them know you look forward to working with them again.
95. Send a follow-up email 3 months later to follow up and see how else
you can help them.
96. Reach out to previous clients before big promotional periods to see if
they need copy support (Black Friday, Summer sale, back-to-school, New
Year etc).
98. Offer previous clients a referral fee when they send you future clients.
101. Join a paid copywriting membership that helps you connect with
business owners who are hiring.
And there you go! 101 ways for you to find your next copywriting client – as
soon as TODAY...
