Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Sikaran is an art of Filipino foot fighting. Rice farmers play Sikaran, an old game. The game was
born out of their daily farming operations, and it was designed to relieve them of their
strenuous labor in the rice paddies. Farmers and farmhands in their youth were the first to play
the game, kicking mud in the faces of their peers with tremendous zeal, prompting laughter
anytime the muck landed on the target.Sikaran is a contact sport, game, contest, or
tournament in which players use their hands and feet to deflect an opponent's attack, which is
usually a strategic kick. Kicking as an active verb is translated to Sikaran since Sikad is a Filipino
root word for kick. Even before Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines on March 16,
1521, the Spanish Conquest of the Philippine Archipelago began.Farmers in the Philippines'
Tanay village, in the province of Rizal, east of Metropolitan Manila, were big fans of this old
pastime. This sport involves scoring with both feet while parrying incoming foot punches with
the hands and arms.

them that can led their future to be dull.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

By following harmful trends, today's youth generation has lost their way. These diversions have
drawn them away from more positive and productive activities that might help them develop
leadership abilities. Recently, we have seen an alarming level of violence, racial strife, and social
inequality. This happenings let the millenial generation go trying vices out of curiosities,
assuming to be looking cool and boredom yet sikaran do can help from this.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY :

Consistent training not only conditions the mind and body to have strength and stamina to fight
back in a violent situation but also helps the body fight disease, stay flexible, strong and active
as people age. Martial arts sikaran provides stress relief and ways to release pent up energy.
Together with a healthy diet sikaran training gives people a well rounded regimen that they can
do anytime and anywhere. People take control of their well being by being mindful of and

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

Sikaran is a Filipino martial art that focuses on hand-to-hand combat. Because Sikaran is a
general term for kicking that is widely used to refer to the kicking parts of various Filipino
martial arts, this article concentrates on a specific discipline that is performed nearly exclusively
in the Rizal region. Martial artists typically experience a sense of serenity, confidence, and
restored peace with themselves and their lives' purpose. By encouraging you to practice deep
breathing, meditation, and mindfulness, Sikaran martial art can help you reduce stress and
anxiety. It aids in the development of your mind's ability to remain calm and attentive while
keeping your attention focused. This is particularly useful when you're juggling various tasks
that require your full focus. It also boosts your mood by releasing "feel-good" hormones like
endorphins. You'll likely gain confidence as you gain experience with the craft. It's a fantastic
method to focus and aim your energy into something positive that you can grow with over time.

You can master your thoughts and

emotions by practicing martial arts. This can aid in the development of emotional stability,
assertiveness, and self-confidence, as well as the reduction of aggressive feelings. Challenges
fortify your mind in the same way that exercise does for your body. Sikaran can assist you by
teaching you how to bounce back from setbacks and the significance of not allowing life to get
the best of you, no matter how difficult things seem.

Sikaran encourages you to delve deep, figure out where you're stuck, and break down mental
barriers. It assists you in identifying areas in your life where you wish to improve and provides
you the confidence to make positive changes. By diverting feelings of powerlessness, it can
assist people in establishing boundaries. It can help you discover your inner strength and heal
from past trauma.

In general, Sikaran emphasizes that it is not about fighting, but rather about self-defense, as
well as other advantages such as discipline, respect, self-control, improved coordination, timing,
technique, confidence, concentration, balance, speed, accuracy, strength, flexibility, and
general health, wellbeing, and a positive way of life.

Chapter 2

The researchers do look for related studies to make it proven that sikaran, is can be a tool to
avoid youth ranges 13-18 years old to avoid vices.

RELATED LITERATURE

Hari Osias Banaag, a Filipino Sikaran Grand Master based in the US, is trying to bring global
attention to the Filipino sport that he literally and figuratively discovered in his own backyard.
Growing up in Baras, he was conscripted by his father to learn Karate as a form of self-defense.
He was awarded by the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the Sole King of Sikaran in 2004, and
received a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award by George Bush in the same year. By 1998, he
was able to establish the Global Sikaran Federation DBA, a Sikaran-Arnis Academy in California.
Aside from Sikaran being an effective form of self-defense, Hari says that it teaches discipline
that one can practice in everyday life. “We teach the values of honor, respect, loyalty, self-
discipline, and dedication. Without these, we would not achieve success. As some train for glory,
power and greed, we choose to promote humility, honor and dignity.”

RELATED STUDY

The effects of martial arts participation on mental and psychosocial health outcomes: a
randomised controlled trial of a secondary school-based mental health promotion program.

Background

Mental health problems are a significant social issue that have multiple consequences,
including broad social and economic impacts. However, many individuals do not seek assistance
for mental health problems. Limited research suggests martial arts training may be an
efficacious sports-based mental health intervention that potentially provides an inexpensive
alternative to psychological therapy.

Methods/design

The study is a 10-week secondary school-based intervention and will be evaluated using a
randomised controlled trial. Data will be collected at baseline, post-intervention, and 12-week
follow-up. Power calculations indicate a maximum sample size of n = 293 is required. The target
age range of participants is 11–14 years, who will be recruited from government and catholic
secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia. The intervention will be delivered in a face-
to-face group format onsite at participating schools and consists of 10 × 50–60 min sessions,
once per week for 10 weeks. Quantitative outcomes will be measured using standardised
psychometric instruments.

Discussion

The current study utilises a robust design and rigorous evaluation process to explore the
intervention’s potential efficacy. As previous research examining the training effects of martial
arts participation on mental health outcomes has not exhibited comparable scale or rigour, the
findings of the study will provide valuable evidence regarding the efficacy of martial arts
training to improve mental health outcomes.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN
The descriptive survey approach was employed in the study to obtain demographic information
that will aid in determining the efficiency of Sikaran as a tool to keep kids away from vices.
Descriptive research is a type of study that seeks to describe something in a methodical and
precise manner, answering what, when, where, and how inquiries rather than any yes or no
questions.

INSTRUMENT OF THE STUDY

The requirements for designing a good data gathering instrument have been considered in the
instrument's development. The questionnaire consists of a series of structured and
unstructured questions devised by researchers to elicit data from respondents. As a result, in
order to authenticate the study of data acquired, the prepared questionnaire must be accurate,
reliable, and not manufactured. It is simple and inexpensive to defend the position and
distribute the questionnaire. This is due to the fact that questionnaires can be distributed via
mail, email, or telephone. The instrument must be authorized throughout this process in order
to receive genuine replies from respondents.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The participants in this study were chosen through random sampling. This sampling approach
was used to assure a roughly equal selection of participants in the study's process. TECHNIQUE
FOR SAMPLING:

The participants in this study were chosen through random sampling. This sampling approach
was used to assure a roughly equal selection of participants in the study's process.

SOURCE OF DATA

The poll was made available on the Internet in order to improve access and accommodations
for respondents aged 13 to 18. The questionnaire provided stated the goal of the research and
invited members to participate.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

During the academic vacation, the researchers created a survey questionnaire to assist its
respondents. The questionnaire was used by the group members and the leader, and once the
questionnaire was known by each researcher, the survey was given to the respondents online.
The responders were given the opportunity to respond to the questions before being collected.
The collected data was evaluated, interpreted, and tallied.

ADMINISTRATION AND RETRIEVAL.

The researchers obtained authorization to perform the study with the help of Sikaran's trainers
and trainees. The respondents were sent a message requesting permission to collect data. The
researchers communicated with the respondents via messenger. The questionnaire, as well as
the proper method for filling it out, were supplied to the respondents by the researchers. The
respondents complete the questionnaires in 2-3 minutes, and the researchers collect the
completed surveys with responses. The researchers then write up their findings.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

The questionnaire responses of 13-18 juvenile sikaran players were statistically evaluated
utilizing the study's data requirements. These data tools are utilized in research to statistically
evaluate students. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, count, rank, and percent are being
considered.
