RECOMBINANT DNA
TECHNOLOGY
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
a. define the recombinant DNA technology
b. outline the processes involved in recombinant
technology/genetic engineering; and
c. discuss the applications of recombinant and its
pros and cons.
WHAT IS RECOMBINANT DNA
TECHNOLOGY?
WHAT IS RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY?

• A techniques used to cut up and join together

genetic material.
• Recombinant DNA has revolutionized many
fields, including medicine, agriculture, and
industry.
The process of recombinant DNA technology consists of the following steps:

1. Isolation of genetic
material (DNA)
2. Cutting of DNA at
specific locations
3. Joining of DNA
fragment
4. Insertion of DNA
into the host cell.
5. Selection and
screening of

Picture Analysis
INSTRUCTIONS:
• The teacher divide the class into 4 groups.
• The teacher provides each group with a brown envelope
containing a picture.
• Students choose one envelope from their group.
• Once all groups have chosen their envelopes, they can open
them simultaneously. Each group will find a picture inside the
envelope.
• Each group will take turns presenting their picture to the class.
They should carefully observe the picture and prepare a short
explanation. They only have 3 minutes to brainstorm and 1
minute for presentation.
• Each group will explain what they see in the picture.
APPLICATION RECOMBINANT DNA
TECHNOLOGY
How is biotechnology used to make other transgenic
plants and animals?
•Plants, animals, fungi, or bacteria.
•Resistance to herbicides and insects.
•A transgenic animal refers to the transfer of genes
from another species or breed.
What are Transgenic organisms?
•Are organisms whose genetic material has been
modified by the introduction of genes from another
species using recombinant DNA technology.
•Come from plants, animals, bacteria, or other
sources.
RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

• Important tool used in the food industry to improve

the quality, safety, and nutritional value of food.
• Allows scientists to insert, delete, or modify specific
genes.
• Produce food additives and enzymes for the
production of various food products.

USE OF RDNA IN AGRICULTURE

• GM crops have been developed to tolerate

environmental stresses, such as drought or high
salinity, which can reduce crop yields.
• Require fewer pesticide applications.
• Reduce environmental damage and lower
production costs.
HOW ARE GMOS
MADE?
USE OF RDNA IN AGRICULTURE
Bt is known as bacillus thuringiensis
which is a soil bacterium that kills
certain insects spontaneously.
Bacillus thuringiensis produces
toxin crystal proteins that destroy the
inside of an pesticides gut after
digesting a small portion of the bt
corn.

IS RECOMBINANT DNA
THE SAME AS GMO?
USE OF RDNA IN AGRICULTURE

Since GMOs were first approved for commercial use and planted in US
soil in 1996, their production has rapidly increased; helping to make
farming methods far more efficient and productive.
USE OF RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY IN ANIMALS
A genetically modified animal is
one whose genetic material has
been altered by adding,
changing, or removing certain
DNA sequences in a way that
does not occur naturally.

RECOMBINANT DNA IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Discovery of new genes and
the identification of genetic
mutations that cause disease
• Involves the use of living
organisms or their components
to develop useful products and
processes
RECOMBINANT DNA IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
MAPPING OF HUMAN GENOME
-Involves identifying and
locating the specific positions
of genes.
Example:
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
-muscle degeneration and weakness
• through gene testing
WHAT ARE RECOMBINANT
ANTIBODIES USED FOR?
RECOMBINANT DNA IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Effective therapeutic treatments
for a range of diseases.
• Used against cancer,
autoimmune disorders and many
other diseases like Covid-19.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
• Creation of genetically • Potential for misuse,
modified organisms (GMOs) particularly in biological
warfare or bioterrorism.
• Instrumental in the
development of modern • Creation of genetically
medicines and therapies. modified organisms.
