Steps for conducting a research

Step 1:
Identify the Research Topic: Clearly define the research question or topic you want to
explore. It should be specific, relevant, and interesting.
1. Our topic is : Cyber bullying
2. Our narrowed down topic is : Effects of cyber bullying on university
students
Step 2:
Review Existing Literature: Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature
relevant to your topic. This helps you understand what is already known and identify any
gaps in knowledge that your research could address.
Find at least 3 sources:
1. JOURNAL OF SCHOOL VIOLENCE 2023, VOL. 22, NO. 2, 198–214

2. Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition volume 42,

Article number: 119 (2023)

3. Journal of Social, Humanity, and Education (JSHE) Vol 3, No 2, 2023, 119-132

Step 3:
Formulate Hypotheses or Research Objectives: Based on your review of literature,
develop clear hypotheses or research objectives that you aim to test or achieve with
your study.
Topic - Effects of cyber bullying on university students

Question- "What are the effects of cyberbullying on male and female students in
terms of academic performance and social interactions?

Thesis - Female students may experience more detrimental effects due to

cyberbullying than male students because of a number of gender sensitive socio
political issues.
Step 4:
Choose Research Design: Decide on the appropriate research design/methodology for
your study. This could be experimental, correlational, descriptive, qualitative,
quantitative, or a combination of these approaches.
My method will be………………………………

Step 5:
Collect Data: Use suitable methods to collect relevant data based on your research
design. This could involve surveys, experiments, observations, interviews, archival
research, etc.
1. What method may be used …………………
2. How tool do I use…………………..
Step 6:
Analyze Data: Once data collection is complete, analyze the data using appropriate
statistical or qualitative analysis techniques, depending on the nature of your data and
research questions.
How do I analyze data Content analysis.
1. Thematic analysis.
2. Narrative analysis.
3. Grounded theory analysis.
4. Discourse analysis.
Step 7:
Interpret Results: Interpret the findings of your analysis in the context of your research
objectives and hypotheses. Discuss the implications of your results and how they
contribute to existing knowledge in the field.

Step 8:
Draw Conclusions: Based on your interpretation of the results, draw conclusions
regarding the research question or hypotheses. Discuss the significance of your findings
and any limitations of the study.
