THE PAPER UNTIL YOU

ARE TOLD TO DO SO
1. If the pressure of compressed air A is 1000 Pa (gauge), the pressure at point C is 8000 Pa (gauge), and
the densities of the fluids in Figure 1 are 1 = 700 kg/m3, 2 = 2000 kg/m3, 3 = 1500 kg/m3, 4 =
1200 kg/m3, and 5 = 3000 kg/m3 determine:
(i) h (30 marks)
(ii) the gauge pressure of compressed air B (10 marks)

2. A 1-m-wide block (dimension into paper) with infinitesimal cross sectional area dydz is merged into
fluid, shown in Figure 2. Suppose the pressure at the centroid of the block is P, the density of the
fluid  , the specific weight of the block  , and the gravitational acceleration is g. Fill in the
following blanks based on all the variables provided.

Fright = ________________________

b) The magnitude of the force acting on the bottom surface of the block Fbottom is,

Fbottom = _______________________

c) The magnitude of the force acting on the top surface of the block Ftop is,

Ftop = _________________________

d) According to Newton’s second law in the z direction F z  maz , complete the followings

3. A 1-m-wide (dimension into paper) weightless gate pinned at the pivot, shown in Figure 3, is used
to separate the left and right tanks. The left tank is filled with compressed air and Fluid 1. Note that
there is no leakage. The top surface of Fluid 2 in the right tank is in contact with atmosphere. The
pressure reading Pair is 1000 Pa (gauge), the density of air is 1.23 kg/m3, the density of Fluid 1 is 800
kg/m3, and the density of Fluid 2 is 1000 kg/m3. Determine the followings:

(i) Total horizontal force, FH on the gate. (10 marks)

(ii) Location of the total horizontal force (indicated as yr). (10 marks)
(iii) Total vertical force, FV on the gate. (10 marks)
(iv) Location of the total vertical force (indicated as x0). (5 marks)
