THE PAPER UNTIL YOU

ARE TOLD TO DO SO
1. If the pressure of fluid 1 at point A is 2000 Pa (gauge), the densities of the fluids in Figure
1 are ρ1 = 600 kg/m3, ρ2 = 700 kg/m3, ρ3 = 1100 kg/m3, ρ4 = 1000 kg/m3, ρ5 = 1200 kg/m3,
ρ6 = 700 kg/m3. Determine:
(i) the gauge pressure of Fluid 6 at the point B (30 marks)
(ii) Δh (10 marks)

2. A 1-m-wide (dimension into paper) tank has an inclined gate at the bottom (Figure 2).
The tank is filled with the compressed air and the fluid. Consider an infinitesimal segment
on the gate of length ds. The distance from the fluid-air interface to this segment is h.
Assume the pressure of the compressed air is P0 (gauge), the density of the fluid ρ, the
gravitational acceleration g. Fill in the following blanks using all the variables provided.

a) The pressure on the infinitesimal segment ds is _________________________________.

b) The magnitude of the force exerted on the segment ds is __________________________.

The direction of the force is ____________________________________________.

(also sketch it on the figure)

c) Therefore, the magnitude of the horizontal force exerted on the infinitesimal segment ds

is __________________________________________.

The magnitude of the vertical force exerted on the infinitesimal segment ds is

__________________________________________.
d) Based on the solutions of 2(c) and 2(d), discuss in a few short sentences how the total
hydrostatic horizontal force is projected area problem and the total hydrostatic vertical
force is the weight of the volume of the fluid above the area.
3. A 2-m-wide (dimension into paper) weightless gate pinned at the pivot, shown in Figure 3,
is used to separate the left and right tanks. The left tank is filled with Fluid 1 and 2, with
the top surface of Fluid 1 in contact with atmosphere. The right tank is filled with
compressed air. Note that there is no leakage. The pressure reading P0 is 800 Pa (gauge),
the density of Fluid 1 is 700 kg/m3, and the density of Fluid 2 is 1000 kg/m3. Determine
the followings:

(i) Total horizontal force, FH on the gate. (10 marks)

(ii) Location yr of the total horizontal force. (10 marks)
(iii) Total vertical force, FV on the gate. (10 marks)
(iv) Location x0 of the total vertical force. (5 marks)
(v) The total moment acting on the pivot to keep the gate shut. (5 marks)
