Sample Problem
1. Determine the pressure at the bottom of the tank P1
shown in KPa. OIL
1.2m
(SG = 0.8)
P2
From the formula of pressure P2 = P1 + γh WATER 1.5m
P3
To determine the pressure at the bottom, we have to go SG = 1.2 0.8m
through each liquid. It is like to reach P4, you have to
P4
start from P1, then P2, then P3, and last P4.
P3 = P2 + (γ water)*h
P2 = P1 + γh, since P1 is at the surface, thus P1 = 0 P3 = 9.418 + (9.81 * 1.5)
And knowing the previous discussion, γ = SG(γwater) P3 = 24.133 KPa
P2 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h
Lastly, determine the pressure at the bottom, P4
P2 = 0 + (0.8 * 9.81 * 1.2)
P4 = P3 + γh
P2 = 9.418 Kpa
P4 = P3 + SG liquid*(γ water)*h
P4 = 24.133 + (1.2 * 9.81 * 0.8)
Let us now determine P3 using P2
P3 = P2 + γh P4 = 33.551 KPa
Sample Problem
1. Determine the pressure at the bottom of the tank P1
shown in KPa. OIL
1.2m
(SG = 0.8)
P2
Since you know the concept, there can be a short cut WATER 1.5m
on solving this. P3
SG = 1.2 0.8m
P2 = P1 + γh
P4
P2 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h

Then proceed already with solving P3 P4 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h + (γ water)*h + SG liquid*(γ water)*h
P3 = P2 + γh P4 = 0 + (0.8 * 9.81 * 1.2) + (9.81 * 1.5) + (1.2 * 9.81 * 0.8)
P3 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h + γh
P3 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h + (γ water)*h P4 = 33.551 KPa

Then proceed already with solving P4

P4 = P3 + γh
P4 = 0 + SG oil*(γ water)*h + (γ water)*h + γh
Sample Problem
2. Determine the pressure at point A. P1

Take note that in the formula P2 = P1 + γh 1m

P2 is the one that is lower in position and P1 is in the Z
higher position.

Let us try to use the technique in the last problem.
1.3 m
Oil Hg
PA = P1 + γHghHg + γHgX - γHgX - γoilZ + γoilZ + γoilhoil SG = 13.6
A SG = 0.8

This means that as long as the location is in the same

level and it is the same liquid, it can be said that it has the
If the unknown is P2 and the known
same pressure
P1 pressure is P1,
P2 = P1 + γh
PA = 0 + (13.6*9.81*1) + (0.8*9.81*1.3) h
If the unknown is P1 and the known
pressure is P2
P2
P1 = P2 – γh
PA = 143.618 KPa
Sample Problem
3. Determine height of oil. P1
P2
You can start either from the left or right leg of the
manometer. In this sample, let us try to determine the
pressure at point 2 h
0.5m
Take note also that both pressure at point 1 and 2 are zeroes.

Oil
P2 = P1 + γoilhoil – γwaterhwater water
SG = 0.8

0 = 0 + (0.8*9.81*h) – (9.81*0.5)

h = 0.625m
