Micro-ProjectReport

" Hydralluic System"

1. Brief Introduction/Rationale

One example of a hydraulic stationary system similar to equipment

used in JCB (a manufacturer of construction equipment) would be
a hydraulic power unit (HPU). A hydraulic power unit consists of a
hydraulic pump, reservoir, motor, and control valves. It's used to
generate hydraulic power for various stationary applications like
hydraulic lifts, material handling systems, and industrial
machinery. The HPU provides the necessary hydraulic pressure
and flow to operate hydraulic cylinders, motors, and other
components within a stationary system, enabling efficient and
controlled movement or operation.

Components Name
1. Hydralluic Cylinders
2. Hydralluic Motors
3. Control Valves
4. Reservior and Filters

1. Hydralluic Cylinders

Construction: Hydraulic cylinders consist of a cylindrical barrel, a

piston rod, a piston, seals, and ports for hydraulic fluid entry and
exit. The barrel houses the piston and hydraulic fluid, while the
piston rod extends from the piston and attaches to the load or
movable component. Seals prevent leakage of hydraulic fluid.

Working: When pressurized hydraulic fluid enters the cylinder

through the inlet port, it pushes against the piston, causing the
piston rod to extend or retract, depending on the application. This
linear motion of the piston rod is used to perform various tasks in
JCB equipment, such as lifting, lowering, tilting, and extending or
retracting attachments

2. Hydralluic Pumps

Construction: Hydraulic pumps can be gear pumps, vane

pumps, or piston pumps. They consist of housing, gears,
vanes, or pistons, and inlet and outlet ports. The pump is
typically driven by the engine or an electric motor.

Working: When the pump is activated, it draws hydraulic fluid

from the reservoir through the inlet port and pressurizes it.
The pressurized fluid is then delivered through the outlet port
to the various hydraulic components, providing the power
needed to operate cylinders, motors, and other equipment in
the JCB machine.

3. Control Valves

Construction: Control valves regulate the flow and direction of

hydraulic fluid. They consist of a valve body, spools, actuators
(such as solenoids or levers), and ports for fluid entry and exit.

Working: Directional control valves determine the direction of

fluid flow, while flow control valves regulate the rate of fluid
flow. When an operator activates the control mechanism (such
as a joystick or lever), it actuates the valve, directing
pressurized fluid to specific hydraulic actuators, such as
cylinders or motors, to control their movement and speed
accurately.

4. Reservior and Filters

Construction: Hydraulic reservoirs are typically made of steel

or aluminium and include filler/breather caps, sight gauges,
and drain plugs. Hydraulic filters are usually made of materials
like cellulose, microglass , or wire mesh and are housed in
filter housings.

Working: Reservoirs store hydraulic fluid, providing a supply

for the system, while filters remove contaminants such as
dirt, debris, and metal particles from the fluid. Clean hydraulic
fluid is essential for the proper functioning and longevity of
hydraulic components in JCB machinery. Regular
maintenance, including fluid checks and filter replacements,
ensures the hydraulic system's reliability and performance.
Understanding the construction and working principles of
these hydraulic components is crucial for maintaining and
troubleshooting hydraulic systems in JCB equipment, ensuring
optimal performance and longevity.
