Assignment (1)

1. A body requires a force of 10.0 kg to accelerate it at a rate of 0.25 m/s2. Determine the
mass of the body in kilogram mass.

2. A reservoir of carbon tetrachloride has a mass of 500 kg and a volume of 0.315 m3.
Determine the carbon tetrachloride’s (a) weight, (b) mass density, (c) specific weight, and
(d) the specific gravity.

3. The specific gravity of ethyl alcohol is 0.75. Calculate its specific weight and its mass
density (a) in SI system, and (b) in English system.

4. A quart of water weighs 200 N, Compute its mass in kilograms.

5. The volume of a rock is found to be 0.00015 m3. If the rock’s specific gravity is 2.60, what
is its weight?

6. A container weighs 863 N when filled with water and 49 N when empty. How much water
(at 20oc) does the container hold in cubic meters?

7. Derive the relationship between specific weight and density starting with Newton's second
law (Force = mass * acceleration).

8. Mercury has a density of 13.60 kg/m3. Compute is its specific weight and specific gravity.

9. A piston slides down ward with a constant velocity through a vertical pipe. The piston is
5.48 inches in diameter and 9.5 inches in length. An oil film between the piston and pipe
wall resists the down ward motion. If the film thickness is 0.002 in. and the cylinder weighs
0.5 pounds, estimate the velocity. (Assume the oil viscosity is 0.016 Ib.sec/ft2 and the
velocity distribution in the gap is linear).

10. A lubricating oil (µ= 0.0065 Ib.sec/ft2) is used to fill a 1-in space between two large
stationary plates. How much force is required to pull a very thin plate (with a surface area
of 2 ft2) between the stationary plates at a speed of 1 ft/sec?
