In standard form, the digits of a number are separated into pe-

riods using commas. In word form, a number is written exactly as it is


read. In expanded form, a number is written as a sum of the values
of all of its digits.

Writing the numbers in three ways:


Standard Form: 261,000,000,000

Word Form: two hundred sixty-one billion

Expanded Form: 200,000,000,000 + 60,000,000,000 +

In a number, 0 can be used as a placeholder. Thus, even if the


digit 0 has no value, it can be used to increase the number of digits of
any number.

 The place value and the value of a digit depend on the digit’s position in
a number.
 The digits can be grouped into periods, each with three place values. The
periods are separated using commas.
 Numbers can be written in standard form, word form and expanded
form.
 When reading a large number, consider the position of the commas. At
each comma, say the name of the period.
 The digit 0 can be used as place holder.
