2.

Compare the ten thousands

1 2 5, 3 4 5

1 4 5, 5 4 6

1 3 8, 2 6 5

Since 2 < 3 < 4, then 125, 345 is the least of the three numbers.

125, 345 < 138, 265 < 145, 546

So, the numbers arranged from least to greatest is 125 345, 138 265, and
145 546.

REMEMBER!
 The greater than sign (>) is used if the first value is larger than the second
value.
 The less than sign (<) is used if the first value is smaller than the second
value.
 The equal sign (=) is used if two values are equal.
 Arranging numbers from the smallest to biggest is the same as arranging
them from least to greatest.
 Arranging numbers from biggest to smallest is the same as arranging them
from greatest to least.
Comparing and Ordering of Numbers
Comparing Numbers

Use relation symbols <, > and = to compare numbers.

A. Use a number line.

The following numbers are arranged from least to greatest.

18 180 18 190 18 200 18 210 18 220 18 230 18 240 18 250 18 260 18 270 18 290

18 260 is to the right of 18 180.

So, 18 260 > 18 180.

B. Use a place value chart.

So, 18 260 > 18 180.

Ordering Numbers

Arrange these numbers from least to greatest: 125 345, 145 546 and 138 265.

Start with the first place value on the left.

1. Compare the hundred thousands

1 2 5, 3 4 5

1 4 5, 5 4 6

1 3 8, 2 6 5

All the numbers have 1 in the hundred thousands place.

MATHEMA
Rounding Numbers
Numbers are rounded to tell about how many. 1,700 can be rounded to the
nearest thousand.

Look at the number line.

The number 1,700 is nearer to 2,000 than to 1,000. This means that it is rounded
to 2,000.

A number halfway between two numbers is rounded to the greater number.

1,500 rounded to the nearest thousand is 2,000. Thus, if the digit you are round-
ing to, is followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9, round the number up. If the digit you are
rounding to, is followed by 0,1,2,3 or 4, round the number down.

Use place value to round numbers:

Example: Round 43,568 to the nearest ten thousand.

Steps:

1. Underline the digit on the given place value. 43,568

2. Circle the number to its right. 4③,568
3. Think: 3 is less than 5 so we must round down. The digit in the given place
remains the same.
4. Replace all the digits to the right of the given place value with zeros.

So, 43 568 rounded to the nearest ten thousand is 40,000.

Rules for Rounding Numbers

 When rounding a number, look at the digit to the right of the place value
you are rounding to.
 If that digit is less than 5, round down the number. The digit in the place
value you are rounding to remains the same.
 If that digit is 5 or greater, round up. Add 1 to the digit in the place value
you are rounding to.
 Replace all the digits to the right of the given place value with zeros.
