Rounding Whole Numbers
Quarter 1- Module 3
Week 2

Name

Introduction
Hello genius! I hope you learned a lot in our previous lesson.
This week’s module contains instructions and set of activities that you
need to accomplish for you to learn new knowledge in rounding whole
numbers.

Refresher

Before we proceed let’s see how good are you in giving place value and
value of the underlined digits.
Number Place Value Value
1) 42 567 234
2) 37 489 112
3) 21 340 980
4) 10 221 432
5) 9 746 009

Study

When we count, measure or calculate we sometimes round to give an

approximation of the actual value. Here are some examples:
Example 1
Ana attended a birthday party with 123 hotdogs on a table. She said
there were about 120 hotdogs on the table. The actual number of hotdogs
which is 123 is rounded or approximated to 120. How did that happen?
Consider the number line below:
123

100 110 120 130

Sa number line ang 123 ay nasa gitna ng 120 at 130. Tama?
Nasa dalawa ngayon kung ano ang approximate ng 123. Para mapili ang
tamang sagot, tignan ang pinakamalapit sa 123. Ang 120 o ang 130?
Kita naman na ang pinakamalapit ay ang 120.
Thus, 123 is rounded to 120, to the nearest 10.
Example 2
Round 237 (tens)
237

230 240 250 260

Answer: 237 when rounded to the nearest ten is 240.
From the above examples we can infer the following steps in rounding
numbers.
To round a number in to a given place value, do the following steps:
1. Look at the value of the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded
Example: 237 (tens)
Look at the number on its right which is 7

2. If the digit is
a. 5 or more, round by increasing the digit to its left by 1. Replace
every digit to its right with zeroes.
b. Less than 5, round to a lower value by keeping the digit to its left
unchanged. Replace every digit to is right with zeroes.
Other examples:
1. 547 (tens)
547 – 7 is more than 5 so we should add 1 to the tens which is 4.
4 + 1= 5, thus the answer is 550. (Remember to replace digits on
the left by 0)

2. 4 618 (hundreds)
4 618 ; 1 is less than 5, so 6 remains unchanged
Answer: 4 600

3. 12 547 (thousands)
12 547 ; digit on its left is 5 which means we add 1 to the
underlined
Answer: 13 000

Activity
Round the following numbers to the nearest given place value.
example: 239 (tens)
Solution: 239 (beside 3 is 9, which is more than 5 so we add 1 to 3)
Answer: 240

1) 439 (tens) ______________________

2) 1 234 (hundreds) ______________________
3) 12 245 (thousands) ______________________
4) 23 165 (hundreds) ______________________
5) 19 789 (thousands) ______________________
Answer the following exercises in your book:
 Let’s Work Together letter A only on page 15

REMEMBER:
Look or underline the digit of the given place value.
Look at the digit on its right, if its is 5 or more than, add 1 to the
underlined digit. If it is less than 5 do not change the underlined
number.
Replace digit to its right with zeroes.
Example:
24 567 (thousands)
Underline: 24 567
Add 1 or copy?: 24 567 ; ADD 1 because the digit on its right is 5
Change to zeroes: 25 000
Answer: 25, 000

 On your Own letter A on page 16.
