Social media and 5 its impacts on society

Social media can be recognized as a platform where people tend to express their
feelings via text, pictures, etc. In this modern era, even the toddler is seen to
have a social media account. Thus, we can conclude that Social media plays a very
important role in our lives. Whether it be for entertainment or communication
social media is a valuable asset. The effect and contribution of social media in
different forms of communication are huge but this effect comes with both
advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, Social media paves an effective way to
supply various important information(diplomatic, personal), transfer important
files, and connect people worldwide. While in the other hand, social media also
hampers the physical relations between individuals ultimately leading to them being
excluded from different social activities. Despite these negative impacts, we can
generally see the positive aspects outweigh the negative ones.

Communication has become highly advanced through the use of modern communication
tools like Social media these days. The old lengthy mediums of communication and
conversation have been compressed and simplified into single computer software.
This allows different information from various parts of the world to be circulated
to people. This helps an individual to create a strong bond and relationship with
different people in the world which ultimately helps an individual to get help and
guidance from different experts in the world. For example- Through Social Media
platforms a high school student living in Nepal can seek guidance counseling from a
counselor USA without actually taking trouble. But, it cannot be ignored that the
use of social media for communication also hampers the social skills of an
individual. Social Media doesn't allow people to have face-to-face interaction and
discussions as people rely on these platforms for every minor or major activity.
Due to this reason, people are seen as being excluded from social activities
resulting in an individual having underdeveloped social skills.
,
In this decade, the advancement of social media has not only attracted people
towards it but has also attracted numerous scammers and hackers. This can be
understood by analyzing this data "Social media hacks have increased by 274% since
2014" These hackers and scammers use these platforms as media to scam people by
playing with their emotions. Nowadays, we often hear about incidences where a
relationship(matrimonial or business) between two individuals taking place through
online platforms. Platforms like Social Media help people across the world to work
together on a common goal or to establish a romantic relationship. However, Most of
these relationships are a form of trap by which various scammers and hackers take
advantage by looting money or leaking valuable and confidential information. This
happens due to a lack of social skills. Hence, Despite being able to work with
people across the world the use of social media for these activities enforces
people having trust issues which ultimately leads to discontinuity of the
relationship as trust is the most vital factor in determining the fate of any
relationship.

Social media is not only home to communication in the form of chats but is also
home for communication via images that tend to represent an individual's life. As
the proverb" A picture tells 1000 words" the pictures on social media also
emphasize a person's personality, way of living, state of mind, etc. This helps to
analyze the different interests of a person and can help do various sorts of
activities like- hiring for a job, starting a relationship, etc. But, nowadays
Social Media has become a platform where everyone fakes their emotion, shows
expensive items, and creates controversy by aiming for fame which hampers the
mental well-being of an individual. For example- When a person sees his/her friend
posting things with expensive jewelry then the person is urged to do the same. Due
to this reason, a person wastes unnecessary time and money on something that is not
required which ultimately leads to hampering the mental state of an individual.
In a nutshell, Social media has played a vital role in modernizing the field of
communication by enhancing the way and making communication accessible and fast.
The fact that social media does good or bad for society depends upon how social
media is being used and to what extent social media is controlling the
communication system. Here, when social media is kept limited to necessary
conversation and fact-checked information there is no end to the benefits to the
use of social media. Whereas, if social media is open to hackers and scammers then
social media does more harm than good.
