Methodology for Power Floating & Broom Finish Work

01. Instruction:
This method statement outlines the procedure for carrying out power floating and
broom finish on concrete surfaces. Power floating is the process of using a power
trowel to smooth and finish freshly laid concrete to achieve a level and durable surface.
Broom finishing involves creating a textured surface with a broom, enhancing traction,
and providing a decorative touch.

02. Materials and Equipment:

• Concrete mix
• Power trowel (float)
• Broom
• Edging tools
• Bull float
• Hand float
• Water source
• Concrete curing compound (if required)

03. Procedure:
3.0.1. Preparation:

Ensure that the concrete slab has been poured and finished to the desired level. Allow
the concrete to set to a suitable consistency for power floating, typically when it can support
the weight of the power trowel without displacing the surface. Inspect the concrete surface for
any defects or imperfections. Repair any cracks or voids as necessary.

3.0.2. Power Floating:

• Start the power trowel and adjust the blade pitch as needed.
• Begin floating the concrete surface, moving the power trowel in overlapping passes
to ensure uniform coverage.
• Gradually increase the rotor speed and apply downward pressure to achieve the
desired level of smoothness.
• Pay special attention to the edges and corners, using hand tools or edging trowels to
ensure they are properly finished.
• Continue power floating until the surface is smooth and free from imperfections.
Avoid overworking the concrete, as this can result in a weakened surface.

3.0.3. Broom Finish:

• Allow the concrete to firm up slightly after power floating, typically, when it
can support the weight of a person without leaving indentations.
• Moisten the surface lightly with water to prevent the broom bristles from
sticking to the concrete.
• Using a coarse-bristled broom, make uniform strokes across the surface,
applying light pressure to create texture.
• Work systematically from one end of the slab to the other, overlapping each
pass slightly to ensure even coverage.
• Once the broom finish is complete, allow the concrete to cure according to the
manufacturer's recommendations.
• Optionally, apply a concrete curing compound to the surface to promote proper
hydration and strength development.

3.0.4. Clean-Up:

• Clean tools and equipment thoroughly with ater to remove any concrete
residue.
• Dispose of waste materials responsibly, following local regulations for
concrete disposal
• Remove barriers or warning signs from the work area once the concrete has
cured sufficiently.

04.Quality Control:

• Inspect the finished surface for any defects or imperfections.

• Ensure that the concrete has achieved the specified level of smoothness and
texture.
• Address any issues promptly to ensure the quality and durability of the
finished product.

05. Conclusion:

By following this method statement, power floating and broom finishing of concrete
surfaces can be carried out safely and efficiently, producing a high-quality finished
product that meets the required specifications. Regular inspection and adherence to
safety protocols are essential to ensure a successful outcome.
