ASSIGNMENT-1 CY1001:

ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY
DATE: 29th Sept. -08th October 2023

1. A polymer sample analysis indicated presence of 20% (by weight) of macromolecules of molecular
weight 2000, 30% (by weight) of macromolecules of molecular weight 3000 and 50% (by weight)
of macromolecules of molecular weight 5000. Calculate the number average and weight average
molecular weight of the sample.
2. Discuss about the Disadvantages of Composite Materials

3. Calculate the number average ( M ̅𝑊 ) molecular masses of Teflon
polymer with the composition described below.

% values are in number, Atomic weights of fluorine= 19, carbon=12)

4. Polyvinylchloride was prepared in presence of (i) peroxide initiator and (ii) TiCl4-Al(C2H5)3

polymers formed in both the cases.

7. 0.28 grams of CaCO3 were dissolved in HCl and the solution was made up to one litre with distilled
water. 100 ml of the above solution required 28 ml of EDTA solution on titration. 100 ml of hard
water sample consumed 33 ml of same EDTA solution EBT indicator. 100 ml of this water after
boiling cooling and filtering required 10 ml of EDTA solution in titration. Calculate the permanent
and temporary hardness of water sample in ppm.
8. Calculate the amount of lime and soda required for softening 50,000 litre of hard water containing
Ca(HCO3)2 = 8.1 mg; Mg(HCO3)2 = 7.5 mg; CaSO4 = 13.6 mg; MgSO4 = 12.0 mg; MgCl2 = 2.0
mg; NaCl = 4.7 mg. Molecular weights: Ca(HCO3)2 = 162; Mg(HCO3)2=146; CaSO4= 136; MgSO4
= 120; MgCl2 = 95.
9. Discuss ion-exchange method and give the chemical reaction involved during softening of water
by this method.
10. Why are zinc plates fixed onto the hull of the ships?
11. Iron corrodes faster than aluminium (Al), even though iron (Fe) is placed below aluminium (Al) in
the electrochemical series, why?
