Standard Form and General Equation Used to Solve

Situational Problems of an Ellipse
A. The general equation of an ellipse is Ax2 + Cy2 + Cx + Ey + F = 0.
Remember, d1 + d2 = 2a. The major axis = 2a, is the distance from V1 to V2.
The relationship between a, b and c is b2 + c2 = a2.
Thus, with “a” is always greater than “b”.

B. The standard form of an ellipse, + = 1.

The major axis is parallel at the x-axis.
Thus, a>b. Center, C(0,0) and the major axis is horizontal.

C. The standard form of an ellipse, + = 1.

The major axis is parallel at the y-axis.
Thus, a<b. Center, C(0,0) and the major axis is vertical.

Situational Problems Involving Ellipses

Let us now apply the concept of ellipse to some situational problems.

1. Give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the ellipse with an
equation of + = 1. Then sketch the graph and include these points.

Solution:
A. From the standard form of an ellipse: + = 1. Standard Form
Thus, + = 1 and the center must be C(0,0). of an Ellipse.
The ellipse is horizontal.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 9,
𝑏 = 6.
Thus, 𝑐 = √𝑎 − 𝑏 . Use the Pythagorean Formula
𝑐 = √9 − 6 , (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value for c.
𝑐 = 3√5
To solve for foci.
If the Center is at the origin
Foci: F1 (−3√5,0) and F2 (3√5,0). (0,0), to solve for Foci: F1

To solve for vertices.
Vertices: V1 (−9,0) and V2 (9,0).
If the Center is at the origin
To solve for covertices. (0,0), to solve for Vertices:
Covertices: W1 (0,−6) and W2 (0,6). V1 (−a,0) and V2 (a,0).

Graph If the Center is at the origin

(0,0), to solve for
Covertices: W1 (0,−b) and
W2 (0,b).

B. To transform the standard

equation to general form.
Given, + = 1.
Solution:
Remember that the general
equation of an ellips is
Ax2 + Cy2 + Cx + Ey + F = 0.
Thus, + = 1.
Exand:
To expand the standard equation of ( )( )( ) ( )( )( )
+ = 1(36)(81)
an ellipse, first you must find the
least common denominator (LCD). ( )( )( ) ( )( )( )
+ = 1(36)(81)
Simplify the equation. 36x2 + 81y2 = 2916
4x2 + 9y2 = 324
Therefore, the general equation is
4x2 + 9y2 = 324.

The ellipse is vertical.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 10,
𝑏 = 5.
Thus, 𝑐 = √𝑎 − 𝑏 . Use the Pythagorean Formula
𝑐 = √10 − 5 , (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value for c.
𝑐 = 5√3
To solve for foci.
If the Center is at the origin

Covertices: W1 (−b,0) and
W2 (b,0).

B. Transform the standard equation

to general form.
Given, + = 1.
Solution:
Remember that the general
equation of an ellipse is
Ax2 + Cy2 + Cx + Ey + F = 0.
Thus, + = 1.
Exand:
To expand the standard equation of ( )( )( ) ( )( )( )
+ = 1(25)(100)
an ellipse, first you must find the
least common denominator (LCD). ( )( )( ) ( )( )( )
+ = 1(25)(100)
Simplify the equation. 100x2 + 25y2

5. A theater room can be constructed by making its ceiling in the shape of a semi-
ellipse; in this case, an enclosure room where whispers can be clearly heard in
some parts of the theater. Thus, the whisper from one focus can be clearly heard at
the other focus. Then, if an elliptical theater room is 90 feet long and the foci are 50
feet apart, how high is the theater room at its center?

Solutions:

Coordinate at the center (0,0).

By Pythagorean Theorem, 𝑏 = 𝑎 − 𝑐 .

If the length of major axis is equal to 2a.

Therefore, 2a=90ft.
Thus, a=45ft.

And if, the length of the foci is 2c.

Therefore, 2c=45.
Thus, c=25ft.

To solve for the value of b use the Pythagorean Theorem, 𝑏 = 𝑎 − 𝑐 .

𝑏 = 45 − 25 ,
𝑏 = 1400 𝑠𝑞. 𝑓𝑡
𝑏 = 10√14 𝑓𝑡.

Therefore, the height of the theater room at its center is 𝟏𝟎√𝟏𝟒 𝒇𝒕.

What I Have Learned

A. Fill in the blanks. Solve the correct answer to complete the solution of the given
equation of an ellipse.

1. Analyze the given equation of 3x2 + 12x + 6y2 + 24y + 18 = 0, then transform into
standard form. Then, give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the
ellipse.
Solutions:
3x2 + 12x + 6y2 + 24y + 18 = 0
3(x2 + 4x) + 6(y2 + 4y) + 18 = 0
3(x2 + 4x +___) + 6(y2 + 4y +___) + 18 = 0
3(x +___)2 + 6(y +___)2 = -18 + (3)(___) + (6)(___)
( ) ( )
Therefore the standard equation is, + = 1.
( ) ( )
Thus, + = 1 and has a center of C(h,k).
The ellipse is ___________________.
Center, C (___,___)
𝑎 = √6
𝑏 = √3
𝑐 = √6 − 3
𝑐 = √3

To solve for Vertices: V1 (h-a,k) and V2 (h+a,k).

Vertices: V1 (___,___)and V2 (___,___).

To solve for Covertices: W1 (h,k-b) and W2 (h,k+b).

Covertices: W1 (___,___)and W2 (___,___).

To solve for Foci: F1 (h-c,k) and F2 (h+c,k).

Foci: F1 (___,___)and F2 (___,___).

B. Solve the following situational problems.

1. Analyze the given equation of + = 1, give the coordinates of the foci,

vertices, and covertices of the ellipse. Then sketch the graph including these points.
Also, transform the standard form into general equation.

( ) ( )
2. If the given equation of an ellipse is + = 1.
Solve the following:
A. Value of a, b, & c
B. Center
C. Foci
D. Vertices
E. Covertices
F. Then sketch the graph including these points.
G. Transform the standard form of equation into general equation.
