A crossword’s puzzle game. Find at least 10 words inside the crossword’s box.
What is It

( ) ( )
D. The standard form of an ellipse, + = 1.
The major axis is parallel at the x-axis.
Thus, a>b. Center, C(h,k) and the major axis is horizontal.
( ) ( )
D. The standard form of an ellipse, + = 1.
The major axis is parallel at the y-axis.
Thus, a<b. Center, C(h,k) and the major axis is vertical.
5. The eccentricity, = .

1. Give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the ellipse with an
equation of + = 1. Then sketch the graph and include these points.
Solution:
A. From the standard form of an ellipse: + = 1. Standard Form
Thus, + = 1 and the center must be C(0,0). of an Ellipse.
The ellipse is horizontal.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 9,
𝑏 = 6.
Thus, 𝑐 = √𝑎 − 𝑏 . Use the Pythagorean Formula
𝑐 = √9 − 6 , (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value for c.
𝑐 = 3√5
To solve for foci.
If the Center is at the origin
Foci: F1 (−3√5,0) and F2 (3√5,0). (0,0), to solve for Foci: F1
(−c,0) and F2 (c,0).
To solve for vertices.
Vertices: V1 (−9,0) and V2 (9,0).
If the Center is at the origin
To solve for covertices. (0,0), to solve for Vertices:
Covertices: W1 (0,−6) and W2 (0,6). V1 (−a,0) and V2 (a,0).
The ellipse is vertical.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 10,
𝑏 = 5.
Thus, 𝑐 = √𝑎 − 𝑏 . Use the Pythagorean Formula
𝑐 = √10 − 5 , (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value for c.
𝑐 = 5√3
To solve for foci.
If the Center is at the origin
Foci: F1 (0,−5√3) and F2 (0,5√3). (0,0), to solve for Foci: F1
(0,−c) and F2 (0,c).
To solve for vertices.
Vertices: V1 (0,-10) and V2 (0,10).
If the Center is at the origin
To solve for covertices. (0,0), to solve for Vertices:
Covertices: W1 (−5,0) and W2 (5,0). V1 (0,−a) and V2 (0,a).

3. Give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the ellipse with an
equation of 16x2 + 96x + 7y2 + 14y + 39 = 0. Then sketch the graph and include
these points.
Solution:
A. From the general equation of an ellipse,
Ax2 + Cy2 + Cx + Ey + F = 0. Remember the general
16x2 + 96x + 7y2 + 14y + 39 = 0. equation of an Ellipse.
By using quadratic equation,
transform the general equation to a standard form.
( ) ( )
Formula must be, + =1. Standard Form of
16x + 96x + 7y + 14y + 39 = 0

an Ellipse.
(16x2 + 96x) + (7y2 + 14y) = -39
16(x2 + 6x) + 7(y2 + 2y) = -39
16(x2 + 6x + 9) + 7(y2 + 2y + 1) = -39 + (16x9) + (7x1)
(16) ∙ (x + 6x + 9) (7) ∙ (y + 2y + 1) 112
+ =
(16) ∙ (7) (16) ∙ (7) (16) ∙ (7)
( )∙( ) ( )∙( )
( )∙( )
+ ( )∙( )
= 𝑜𝑟 1.
( ) ( )
Therefore, the standard equation must be ( )
+ ( )
=1.
( ) ( )
Thus, + = 1 and has a center of C(h,k).
The ellipse is vertical.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 4,
𝑏 = √7. Use the Pythagorean Formula
Thus, 𝑐 = √4 − 7. (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value
𝑐 = √9, for c.
𝑐 = 3.
Coordinates C(-3,-1).
To solve for foci. If the Center is (h,k), to
Foci: F1(-3,-1-3) and F2 (-3,-1+3). solve for Foci: F1 (h,k-c)
F1(-3,-4) and F2 (-3,2). and F2 (h,k+c).

4. Give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the ellipse with an
equation of 2x2 + 8x + 4y2 + 48y + 144 = 0. Then sketch the graph and include
these points.
Solution:
A. From the general equation of an ellipse,
Ax2 + Cy2 + Cx + Ey + F = 0. Remember the general
2x2 + 8x + 4y2 + 48y + 144 = 0. equation of an Ellipse.
By using quadratic equation,
transform the general equation to a standard form.
( ) ( )
Formula must be + = 1. Standard Form of
2x + 8x + 4y + 48y + 144 = 0.
2 2 an Ellipse.
(2x2 + 8x) + (4y2 + 48y) = -144
2(x2 + 4x) + 4(y2 + 12y) = -144
2(x2 + 4x + 4) + 4(y2 + 12y + 36) = -144 + (2x4) + (4x36)
(2) ∙ (x + 4x + 4) (4) ∙ (y + 12y + 36) 8
+ =
(4) ∙ (2) (4) ∙ (2) (4) ∙ (2)
( )∙( ) ( )∙( )
( )∙( )
+ ( )∙( )
= 𝑜𝑟 1.
( ) ( )
Therefore, the standard equation must be ( )
+ ( )
=1.
( ) ( )
Thus, + = 1 and has a center of C(h,k).
The ellipse is horizontal.
Therefore,
𝑎 = 2,
𝑏 = √2. Use the Pythagorean Formula
Thus, 𝑐 = √2 − 2. (𝑐 = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ), to get the value
𝑐 = √2. for c.
Coordinates C(-2,-6).
To solve for foci. If the Center is (h,k), to
Foci: F1(-2-√2,-6) and F2 (-2+√2,-6). solve for Foci: F1 (h-c,k)
and F2 (h+c,k).
To solve for vertices.
Vertices: V1 (-2-2,-6) and V2 (-2+2,-6). Graph
V1 (-4,-6) and V2 (0,-6).

5. A theater room can be constructed by making its ceiling in the shape of a semi-
ellipse; in this case, an enclosure room where whispers can be clearly heard in
some parts of the theater. Thus, the whisper from one focus can be clearly heard at
the other focus. Then, if an elliptical theater room is 90 feet long and the foci are 50
feet apart, how high is the theater room at its center?
Solutions:
Therefore, the height of the theater room at its center is 𝟏𝟎√𝟏𝟒 𝒇𝒕.

equation of an ellipse.
1. Analyze the given equation of 3x2 + 12x + 6y2 + 24y + 18 = 0, then transform into
standard form. Then, give the coordinates of the foci, vertices, and covertices of the
ellipse.
Solutions:
3x2 + 12x + 6y2 + 24y + 18 = 0
3(x2 + 4x) + 6(y2 + 4y) + 18 = 0
3(x2 + 4x +___) + 6(y2 + 4y +___) + 18 = 0
3(x +___)2 + 6(y +___)2 = -18 + (3)(___) + (6)(___)
