SUMMARIZE ASSESSING SPEAKING AND LISTENING

1. Assessing Speaking
Assessing speaking requires that we either observe a “live” oral
performance or that we capture the performance by some means for
evaluation at a later time. A method elicitation must be selected, rating scales
must be developed, and interviewers and/or raters must be trained. There are
five types speaking assessments based on Brown (2004, p. 141). They are
imitative speaking tasks, intensive speaking tasks, responsive speaking tasks,
interactive speaking tasks, and extensive speaking tasks.

2. Assessing Listening
Assessing listening is the process of assessing the spoken text through
the auditory insight. It requires the ability to recognize the spoken input with
the auditory capacity and the knowledge of spoken language. There are four
basic types of listening, which are intensive, responsive, selective, and
extensive. Assessments are designed to cater to these four categories and
assess them accordingly.
