REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Related Literature

The exploration of sustainable and eco-friendly sources of electrical

energy has gained significant attention in recent years, with researchers
increasingly recognizing the potential of organic materials as viable
alternatives to traditional energy sources. In this regard, the work of
AJatnika and Saptoningsh (2012) represents a significant contribution to
the field, demonstrating the remarkable potential of aloe vera as a
renewable and sustainable source of electrical energy.

Radiation Biology
In their study, AJatnika and Saptoningsh (2012) revealed that aloe
vera extract contains minerals that can function as an electrolyte solution
for conducting electricity. By harnessing this power, the researchers
created a powerful battery box that produced an impressive voltage of
71.5 volts when connected to a series of circuits. This battery box was
capable of powering a range of electrical devices, including LED lights, 6V
incandescent lamps, and 12V mini electrical control panels.
Conceptual Framework

Moreover, the researchers proposed a sophisticated power

management circuit design that could effectively harness, store, and
manage the electrical energy harvested from aloe vera plants to power
remote sensors. This power management circuit consisted of two primary
sections: an energy storage reservoir for storing energy harvested from
plants, and a voltage regulation system for boosting and managing energy
following a load operation.

The results of this study are truly remarkable, as they demonstrate

that under specific setup conditions, the electrical energy harvested from
aloe vera can produce an output of 3.49 volts and 1.1 mA. These findings
suggest that aloe vera has the potential to be used as a viable source of
electrical energy for various applications, including powering remote
sensors and other low-power devices.

Furthermore, the researchers' proposed power management circuit

design offers a promising solution for effectively harnessing, storing, and
managing the electrical energy .generated from aloe vera plants. By
incorporating an energy storage reservoir and a voltage regulation system,
the circuit design ensures that the electrical energy generated from aloe
vera plants is stored efficiently and utilized effectively.

In conclusion, the work of AJatnika and Saptoningsh (2012)

represents a significant contribution to the field of sustainable and eco-
friendly sources of electrical energy. Their findings demonstrate the
remarkable potential of aloe vera as a renewable and sustainable source of
electrical energy, capable of producing an output of 3.49 volts and 1.1 mA
under specific setup conditions. Additionally, their proposed power
management circuit design offers a promising solution for effectively
harnessing, storing, and managing the electrical energy generated from
aloe vera plants. As such, this study has significant implications for the
development of sustainable and eco-friendly sources of electrical energy
and highlights the potential of organic materials as viable alternatives to
traditional energy sources.

METHODOLOGY

Experimental Design

Things needed for the Aloe Vera Battery: Aloe Vera/ Gel Battery
Graphite Rod Zinc Plate Wires Container MultiMeter

Procedure To begin, a small container must be procured, and two

holes should be created to serve as the positive and negative terminals.
The size and shape of the container can vary depending on the desired
voltage and capacity of the battery. Next, the gel from an aloe vera leaf
must be extracted and used as the electrolyte solution. The voltage of the
battery is determined by the amount of aloe vera gel used, with a higher
volume of gel resulting in a higher voltage output. Once the aloe vera gel
has been extracted, a graphite rod and zinc plate must be retrieved from
an old battery. These materials will serve as the anode and cathode of the
homemade battery, respectively. The graphite rod and zinc plate should
then be connected to wires and inserted into the terminals of the
container. At this point, the voltage of the battery can be tested using a
multimeter or other voltage-measuring device. This step is optional but
can provide valuable information about the battery's output and
performance. To charge the homemade battery, it can be connected to a
charger and a device for 30 minutes. This process will allow the battery to
store electrical energy and prepare it for use. After charging, the voltage of
the battery can be tested again to ensure that it has reached the desired
level. If the voltage is too low, the charging process can be repeated until
the desired voltage is achieved.

To create a homemade battery using aloe vera as an electrolyte

source, follow these steps:

Prepare the aloe vera gel:

Cut a small piece of aloe vera leaf from the plant.
Using a sharp knife, carefully scrape the gel from the leaf. Be careful
not to damage the leaf or remove too much gel.
Place the extracted gel in a container or jar.
Prepare the battery container:
Find a suitable container, such as a glass jar or a plastic container
with a lid.
Drill or create two holes in the container, one for the positive
terminal (anode) and one for the negative terminal (cathode).
Prepare the electrodes:
Obtain a graphite rod and a zinc plate from an old battery.
Strip the ends of the graphite rod and the zinc plate to expose the
metal.
Wrap the ends of the graphite rod and the zinc plate with electrical
tape to insulate them.
Assemble the battery:
Insert the graphite rod into the positive terminal hole of the
container.
Insert the zinc plate into the negative terminal hole of the container.
Connect the wires from the graphite rod and the zinc plate to the
battery container.
Test the voltage of the battery (optional):
Using a multimeter or other voltage-measuring device, measure the
voltage of the battery.
Record the voltage for future reference.
Charge the battery:
Connect the battery to a charger and a device for 30 minutes.
After charging, measure the voltage of the battery again.
If the voltage is too low, repeat the charging process until the
desired voltage is achieved.
Use the battery:
The battery can now be used to power small electronic devices,
such as LEDs or small motors.
To use the battery, connect the positive terminal to the positive side
of the device and the negative terminal to the negative side of the device.
By following these steps, you can create a homemade battery using
aloe vera as an electrolyte source. This method offers a cost-effective and
educational alternative to traditional battery sources, providing an
opportunity to learn and experiment with the fundamentals of electricity.

—Note: Always exercise caution when working with electricity and battery
components. Wear gloves and avoid touching any exposed metal parts.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Recommendations

In this study, we aim to demonstrate the feasibility of using aloe vera as an

electrolyte source in a homemade battery. Aloe vera is a widely available
and renewable plant that has been used in traditional medicine for its
healing properties. In this study, we will explore the potential of using aloe
vera as an electrolyte in a battery system.
To begin, we will need the following materials:

Aloe vera leaves: These will be used as the electrolyte source.

Copper wires: These will serve as the positive terminal of the battery.
Zinc wires: These will serve as the negative terminal of the battery.
A glass jar or container: This will serve as the battery housing.
A battery testing device: This will be used to measure the voltage and
capacity of the battery.
The following steps will be performed to create the homemade battery:

Cut the aloe vera leaves into small pieces and place them in a glass jar.
Pour a small amount of distilled water into the jar to prevent evaporation.
Place the copper wires into the jar and connect one end to the positive
terminal of the battery testing device.
Place the zinc wires into the jar and connect one end to the negative
terminal of the battery testing device.
Seal the jar and allow the battery to charge for a few hours.
After charging, the battery can be tested by measuring its voltage and
capacity using the battery testing device. The voltage and capacity of the
battery will depend on the amount of aloe vera used and the specific
properties of the aloe vera leaves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, creating a homemade battery using aloe vera as an

electrolyte source is a simple and accessible process that can be
accomplished with a few basic materials. This method offers a cost-
effective and educational alternative to traditional battery sources,
providing an opportunity to learn and experiment with the fundamentals of
electricity. By following the steps outlined above, individuals can create a
reliable and sustainable battery for their devices in a pinch.
However, it is important to note that the efficiency and capacity of the
battery may not be as high as those of commercial batteries. Additionally,
the safety of the battery should be considered, as aloe vera may not be as
safe as commercial electrolytes. Nonetheless, this study provides a
valuable learning experience and a unique opportunity to explore the
potential of renewable and sustainable energy sources.

For further research, it would be interesting to explore the potential of

using other renewable and sustainable materials as electrolytes in battery
systems. This could lead to the development of more efficient and
environmentally friendly battery technologies. Additionally, it would be
beneficial to investigate the long-term performance and safety of the
battery, as well as the potential environmental impacts of using aloe vera
as an electrolyte source.
