intersubjectivity

Edmund Husserl

What is it?
Intersubjectivity is most simply stated
as the interchange of thoughts and
feelings, both conscious and
unconscious, between two persons or
“subjects,” as facilitated by empathy.

Accepting, and Respecting

Paul Ricoeur
self b4 others
Man is this plural and collective
unity in which the unity of
destination and the differences of
destinies are to be understood
through each other (Ricoeur, 1986).
For Ricoeur, as he employed Rene
Descartes in elucidating the concept
of the self and other reiterates, one
should learn how to develop oneself
before one reaches out for the other.

self-care is the stepping stone for

taking care of others.

If one knows the self well, understands

the self, then the act of reaching out
for others is not a farfetched reality
(Ricoeur, 1994).
Martin Buber’s
I & Thou philosophy
“The content and relation of these
two world is the theme of I and
Thou. The other person, the Thou,
is shown to be a reality - that is - it is
given to me, but it is not bounded by
me.” - Martin Buber, 1923
The human person
is not only being-
in-the-world, but
also being-with-
others or being-in-
relation.
What is the I - Thou
relationship?
I - Thou relationship

In his encyclical letter, Fides et
ratio, he upholds the human
person as one who exists and
acts (conscious acting, has a
will, has a self-determination)
Action reveals the nature of human agent. Our
identity, our character, our personality is shown
through our behavior, actions, and choices.

We are what we do.

community sensitivity, through positive
and supportive attitudes toward PWDs, is
also an important component (Map 2004).
To approach the Other in
conversation is to welcome his
expression, in which at each
instant he overflows the idea a
thought would carry away from
it.

Therefore, it is to receive from

the Other beyond the capacity
of the I, which means exactly: to
Emmanuel Levinas have the idea of infinity. But this
also means: to be taught
(Emmanuel Levinas, 1979).
For Levinas, "Ethics is the

is only by acknowledging

"Babae" by Inang Laya is a song that
problematizes the gender/sex roles
assigned by the social order to women since
their childhood. It opposes the dominant
patriarchal institutions (e.g family, religion,
the education, the law and the media).
“Kayo ba ang mga Maria Clara
Mga Hule at mga Sisa
Na di marunong na lumaban?
Kaapiha'y bakit iniluluha?
Mga babae, kayo ba'y sadyang
mahina?”
"Kayo ba ang mga Cinderella
Na lalake, ang tanging pag-asa?
Kayo nga ba ang mga Nena
Na hanapbuhay ay pagpapuputa?
Mga babae, kayo ba'y sadyang
pang-kama?"
"Ang ating isip ay buksan
At lipuna’y pag-aralan,
Paano nahubog ating isipan
At tanggaping kayo’y mga libangan
Mga babae, ito nga ba’y kapalaran?"
“Bakit ba mayroong mga Gabriela
Mga Teresa at Tandang Sora
Na di umasa sa luha't awa?
Sila'y nagsipaghawak ng sandata
Nakilaban, ang mithiin ay lumaya.”
“Bakit ba mayrong mga Lisa
Mga Liliosa at mga Lorena
Na di natakot makibaka
At ngayo'y marami nang kasama?
Mga babae, ang mithiin ay lumaya.”
The song of "Inang Laya"
encourages women to stand
up for their rights.
Also, the song is all about Filipina women
who are not only burdened but have been
dynamically partaking in activities that
seek emancipation for their sector and
other marginalized groups.

Authentic Dialogue
Open and honest conversation
Martin
Heidegger
we are a conversation
In Heidegger’s essay, humankind
is a conversation.
Conversation is more than an
idle talk but a dialogue
All conversations are really one
conversation.
Language creates human world.
A conversation attempts to
articulate who and what we are.
We are human beings who care
about more than information
and gratification.
Martin
Buber
Life of a dialogue is a mutual
sharing of our inner selves in
the realm of the interhuman.
Between two persons is a
mutual awareness of each
other as persons avoiding
objectification.
Personal making entails the
affirmation of the other as a
person who is unique and has
distinct personality. There is
acceptance of the person;
unfolding the other actualizes
himself.

Cultural
Barrier
Cultural barriers to communication are the
differences in language, customs, and
beliefs that may exist between people of
different cultures or societies. These
barriers can prevent people from
understanding each other, leading to
miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Cultural barriers can also lead to cultural

clashes, which are disagreements or
conflicts caused by differences in beliefs
and values.
